Stand with Joey: Help His Family through this FIGHT #joeystrong

To know Joey is to love him. Today, our family is coming together to ask for help for someone who has spent his entire life showing up for all of us.

At 44 years old, Joey is the heart of our family—a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He is the person who brings everyone together, fills every room with laughter, and always puts others first. For nearly 20 years, he worked for Con Edison as a Splicer and Shop Steward, taking immense pride in providing for his family and protecting his coworkers. That same selflessness has defined every part of who he is.

In August 2024, our world changed when Joey was diagnosed with Stage IV intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of liver cancer. For nearly two years, he fought with incredible strength through relentless treatments, setbacks, and uncertainty. But the cancer has continued to progress. His body is growing weaker, treatments are becoming harder to tolerate, and his prognosis has become heartbreakingly bleak. Unable to work since January 2026, Joey now faces an uncertain financial and insurance future for the family he has always protected.

Through every step of this journey, Mattie—his wife of 15 years, best friend, and absolute rock—has cared for him tirelessly while raising their four children: Anna, Antonio, and 11-year-old twins Lilliana and Joseph. Being a father is Joey’s greatest pride, and all he wants is to guide them, celebrate their milestones, and share in the simple everyday moments. With Joey needing continuous care, Mattie is unable to work full-time, making their primary focus keeping their family supported and together.

Joey’s love has always had room for everyone. He has been a steady father figure to his younger brother Steven and sister HeatherMarie, who simply call him "their guy," and a vital, constant presence for his first niece, AlexaMarie. To his mother, Mary, Joey has been a lifelong anchor of strength and unconditional love. He is like a son to his uncle Bernie and aunts Catherine and June, and to the younger generation—including Addison and Jackson—he will always be their beloved "Big JoJo."

Joey was always too proud to ask for help, wanting to fight this battle on his own terms. But after two years, the financial weight of ongoing medical expenses, medications, travel, and daily living costs has become overwhelming.

We are turning to our community to give Joey, Mattie, and their children the financial breathing room they desperately need. More than anything, we want to buy them time—more family dinners, more birthdays, and more priceless, ordinary moments together without the burden of the next expense.

We are not asking for help because we have given up; we are asking because we want to make whatever time Joey has left as peaceful, meaningful, and supported as possible. Joey has spent his life showing up for everyone else. Now, it is our turn to show up for him.
