Stand with Howard and Karen in Crisis
Donation protected
PLEASE Support Howard Newton who had an unimaginable change of life situation in September 2024 due to a partial ( incomplete) Spinal-cord injury.
Howard Newton and his lovely wife Karen are well known in the local community - and beyond - for their kind, helpful and non-judgemental disposition.
Those who have met Karen and Howard love, respect and admire both because of their steadfest reliability, kindness, and unconditional compassion for any human and for all animals.
These two amazing people - either separate or as a unit - have been volunteering for our local communities for years in the fire department, ambulance, and ski-patrol.Additionally -as of recent, Karen and Howard are the Volunteer Coordinators for Clinton County CART- the county's Animal Response Team.
In Sept 2024, Howard was injured in an unfortunate horse accident, which left him with spinal injuries and subsequently confined to a wheelchair and is still unable to walk.
Doctors are cautiously optimistic that Howard will regain, at least, the ability to stand up on his own- nevertheless, there is no guarantee with spinal injuries.
Presently, he is wheelchair-bound and needs two people to support him to stand up. Due to the severity of his injury Howard basically needs home assistance 24/7.
Family members, some friends and neighbors are lending a helping hand at times, but Karen is the around-the-clock sole provider and caretaker of Howard since the debilitating accident.
Although Howard has basic health insurance, many expenses are sadly not covered. Insurance will not cover household modifications to accommodate the wheelchair (such as installing a wheelchair accessible shower, the lowest estimate is $7500), costly wheelchair-accessible transportation to doctor appointments in Vermont (typically cost $400/roundtrip), over-the counter medication etc.
Additionally, many routine household and maintenance tasks that Howard happily performed prior to his injury, are now taken care of by Karen - when possible. Many of these chores need to be hired out: such as frequent snowplowing, fixing sinks, checking the well etc.
Since Howard is still wheelchair bound, unable to stand up on his own and a partial or full recovery is sadly not guaranteed, a wheelchair accessible van is also needed to transport Howard to and from the numerous doctor's appointments and to allow him to receive more frequent physical therapy at a rehab-center.(If the wheelchair accessible van is no longer needed- it will be re-donated to another person/institution.)
