On the 24th of December 2025, our lives were turned upside down when our beautiful mum, Helena was told she most likely had a blood cancer. A time that was meant to be filled with love, laughter, and joy quickly became one filled with anxiety, fear, and heartbreak as we waited for a final diagnosis. While the New Year is usually a time for fresh starts and new goals, we instead received the official diagnosis: Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells.

The news came as an absolute shock. Helena had experienced only minimal symptoms, and we never imagined that what seemed like simple rib pain would lead to something so serious.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that affects the plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is a none-curable chronic, relapsing condition, meaning that while treatment can manage the disease hopefully for many years, it will eventually return.

Since receiving this diagnosis, our weeks have been filled with hospital visits, blood tests, chemotherapy, injections, dental procedures, and countless appointments as Helena began the first stage of her treatment. She is now preparing to enter the second stage, an intensive phase involving more aggressive chemotherapy, plasma cell retrieval followed by an autologous stem cell transplant. This will totally replace Helena’s stem cell system, leaving her immunocompromised and will require her to take significant time away from work and will bring challenging side effects, meaning she will need ongoing care and support.
