Our dear friend and UTMB colleague, Heather Gomez, is going through unimaginable heartbreak.

On Monday, February 2nd, her husband, Luis Gomez, was taken into ICE custody while driving to work. He is currently being detained out of state and has not yet been given access to legal counsel.

Luis has lived in the United States since he was just 12 years old. For more than 30 years, he has been a devoted, hardworking, tax-paying member of our community, with no criminal record. He is a loving husband, a devoted father to two young boys, and a cherished friend to many.

This unexpected and traumatic situation has placed an overwhelming emotional and financial burden on the Gomez family. They are facing fear, uncertainty, and loss—all while doing everything in their power to bring Louis home. No family should have to endure this alone.

We are urgently raising funds to help:

1. Retain an experienced immigration attorney,

2. Cover potential bond costs, which can be significant, and

3. Support the Gomez family as they navigate this crisis after losing their primary source of income.
