Support Hannes’s Recovery After a Serious Infection During Hardrock 100
After waiting 8 years, Hannes finally had the opportunity to run the Hardrock 100, a bucket-list ultramarathon and a goal he had been working toward for nearly a decade. Just days before the race, however, he developed a painful abscess on his leg, likely caused by a spider bite. Despite the discomfort, he started the race, hoping it would improve. Unfortunately, the swelling worsened significantly during the run, spreading from above his knee to below his ankle.
By mile 75, it was clear something was wrong. On the advice of medical staff and his crew, Hannes made the difficult decision to stop. Continuing would have put him at high risk for compartment syndrome, a dangerous condition where pressure builds within the muscles and can lead to permanent damage or loss of the limb.
He was taken to the hospital, where doctors initially feared a serious infection called necrotizing fasciitis (a rare condition that can require limb removal). Thankfully, a CT scan ruled that out, but further testing revealed that he had developed MRSA — Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a type of staph infection resistant to many antibiotics — as well as rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which damaged muscle tissue releases harmful proteins into the bloodstream.
Hannes was rushed into emergency surgery to remove infected tissue and control the spread of the infection. Thanks to quick action by his medical team, the surgery was successful, and he avoided more serious complications.
Hannes spent four days in the hospital receiving IV antibiotics and fluids. His care team monitored him closely to prevent further complications and protect the health of his leg. He is now recovering well and feeling incredibly grateful for the outcome, but he is facing substantial medical bills and will miss several weeks of work. As an independent contractor without sick leave or paid time off, this creates a real financial strain, especially while also providing for his 18-month-old daughter, Nova, who depends on him.
This fundraiser will help cover hospital expenses and basic living costs while Hannes takes the time he needs to heal. Any support, whether through a donation or by sharing this page, is deeply appreciated.
Thank you so much for being part of his community. He is grateful for his health and can't wait to run in the mountains again.
