On Sunday Jan 4th, Habibiz Cafe, a beloved family-run staple in our Winnipeg community, was the target of a disturbing and violent hate crime.
The family arrived at their business to find two of their massive storefront windows shattered by a hammer. Among the shards of glass, a note was left behind containing vitriolic, xenophobic slurs: "LEAVE OUR COUNTRY. TERRORIST. F**K OFF!"
I am starting this GoFundMe on behalf of the family because, while this act was intended to intimidate and isolate them, we know that this does not represent the Winnipeg we call home.
The Scale of the Damage
The destruction is significant. The storefront features two specialized, oversized panes of glass, each measuring approximately 2 meters wide by 3 meters tall. Due to the sheer size and custom nature of these windows, the replacement cost is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $30,000.
While the cafe is insured, the family faces a difficult reality: the high deductible, combined with the substantial premium increases that follow a claim of this size, would put a crushing long-term financial strain on their small business.
The Winnipeg Police Service has been notified, a formal report has been filed, and officers are currently actively investigating this as a hate-motivated incident.
Why Habibiz Needs Our Help
Habibiz Cafe has always been more than just a place to eat; it is a place of refuge and generosity. The family behind the counter is known for their "community-first" heart, often helping others in their own times of need. Now, it is our turn to have their backs.
We are calling on all Winnipeggers, Manitobans, and Canadians to come together. Let’s show that our province is defined by kindness and diversity, not by the actions of one person with a hammer and a hateful note.
Our Goal and Your Impact
Repairs: All funds raised will go directly toward the glass replacement, cleanup, and necessary security upgrades to ensure the family and staff feel safe returning to work.
Feeding the Community: In the true spirit of the family’s values, any funds raised above the cost of repairs will be used to provide meals for the less fortunate in our city. If you cannot donate at this time, please consider sharing this page or visiting the cafe to buy a shawarma and offer a kind word. Let’s drown out this act of cowardice with a massive wave of community support.
Thank you for standing with Habibiz Cafe.
