"The worst feeling is when they can't tell you what's wrong with your baby..." ~ Mom

My name is Gina King, and while I’ve spent my life helping others survive hardship, today I’m trying to save my own sons.

I am running out of time.

Dear friends, family, and compassionate hearts, after a few rounds of bringing Jonathan back from end-stage renal failure early last year, and later in the year, where his body was dumping calcium, and November, juggling my mom's stroke, my devotion towards "creating a world where my boys could thrive" became top priority even more so.

I am here to save two little boys weather the storm of insurance paperwork and crushing timelines.

As a child, I lived in a state facility in Detroit, and no one would blame me if because I had no one then, I grew up not to help others. Instead, I’ve spent the last 12 years helping families like mine—those facing medical, emotional, employment, and financial hardship—get access to the support they need.

I’ve always said we need to build a world where our children can thrive... well -
“I need your help to create it a little sooner than I thought.”

Today, I’m writing not just as an advocate, but as a mother in crisis.

I need your help.

Jonathan’s Crisis
You’ve heard it said:
“If you’ve met one kid with autism, you’ve met one kid with autism.”
Jonathan is one of those one-in-a-million children. He is 12 years old, blind, soft bones fragile from rickets, and now facing a sudden medical decline. After surviving end-stage renal failure, he’s now rapidly losing weight, and we’re at a critical juncture. If we don’t intervene fast, we could lose him.

People think he’ll eat when he’s hungry. But not Jonathan.
If you have ever joined one of my job Zoom help sessions, Jonathan was the kid there with me.

He doesn’t recognize hunger the way most do, and his body is shutting down. So I prompt him, 10 times a day.
Doctors are recommending specialized care, which I provide — we are leaning to services potentially out-of-state—and time is not on our side. The medical lab results are unreliable. You can help us as we figure things out!!

At the same time, my 14-year-old son, Joseph, is also struggling. He’s nonverbal, 6 feet tall, and deeply affected by Jonathan’s condition. His behavioral crisis is intensifying as he senses his brother’s suffering, and he’s becoming protective, overwhelmed, and aggressive. I’m doing everything I can to protect them both—and the people helping us.

Your Impact:
To bring Jonathan home safely after treatment—and stabilize both of my boys—I need your help to secure:

Specialized medical and safety equipment, including:

  • A reinforced bed and bedside safety rails so Jonathan can stay in place and heal
  • Padded locks, secure windows, and door alarms for elopement prevention
  • A Sarah Steady or similar lift for safe transitions
  • Special, high-calorie nutritional drinks (about $80 per box, per week)
  • A bedside commode, incontinence tools, and disposable bedding (both boys are still in diapers)

Stabilization support for our family, including:
  • Emergency rent and utilities to maintain our very unique, disability-adapted home
  • Three shifts of trained caregivers to keep everyone safe while I’m with Jonathan
  • Travel and temporary lodging near specialized medical providers
  • Support to offset lost income during this full-time care period
  • Specialized care and therapy not yet covered by insurance, despite urgency
  • This is our third major battle—and I pray it’s our last. This round, we’re trying to raise $71,000 to make it through the next 12 weeks of treatment, recovery, and stabilization.

A Light in the Darkness
I won’t lie—these back-to-back blows without a break are the hardest thing I’ve ever faced. But I haven’t lost hope. I believe in my sons. I believe in miracles. And I believe in the power of community.

Even while fighting this, I continue to serve other families, as a listening ear, because I know what it’s like to feel alone. I refuse to let any family go through that if I can help it.
Now, I need that same support.

If I’ve ever helped you, if I’ve ever inspired you—or if you just believe no mother should carry this alone—please help us today.
