Gary Kabeya is a cherished member of the Buffalo community whose compassion and service have touched countless lives. Since arriving in Buffalo in 2024 to live with his uncle’s family—all legal permanent residents—Gary has made it his mission to help those around him every single day.
Gary first came to the United States on a student visa. When violent conflict broke out in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he tragically lost communication with his parents. To this day, no one has been able to reach them or confirm their whereabouts, and they are presumed deceased. Unable to return home or contact his family, Gary faced tremendous hardship. Because of his visa status, he could not legally work and was unable to pay his school fees. He came to live with his uncle’s family in Buffalo and filed for asylum, seeking safety and stability. His asylum application was accepted pending a determination, and about a month ago, he was granted legal working papers.
Despite being lawfully employed and in good standing with immigration authorities, Gary was recently detained by ICE for reasons that remain unclear. This detention has deeply affected the many people who know him as a kind, hardworking, and selfless individual.
Nearly every day, Gary rides his bike across the city to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. Three times a week, he serves with Friends Feeding Friends at Fireman’s Park, where he helps feed, clothe, and pray with the homeless. He also volunteers with GoBike Buffalo, teaching children to ride safely, repairing their bicycles, and spreading encouragement. At the Buffalo Dream Center, his local church, Gary gives his time generously through the mobile food pantry, children’s ministry, and after-school programs.
We, his friends and community, are coming together to raise funds for Gary’s legal defense and release. Our hope is to bring him home—to the family, friends, and city he loves so much—where he can continue the good work that defines his life.
