On June 26, Erick Machado was taken into custody by ICE. We are raising funds to help cover legal fees, starting with his bond hearing.
As of July 1, he is being held in a federal prison in Atlanta. (This is an administrative decision; Erick has committed no malicious crimes.) Even though he has an excellent lawyer willing to take his case, she has not been able to request a bond hearing due to the fact that the records system is incredibly slow.
I have known Erick since he came to the US when was 9 years old. His family was fleeing the monumental violence, corruption, and danger of Honduras. Honduras remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
Erick is one of the most wholesome, intelligent, and driven people I have ever met. As a child, joy shone through the language barrier as he built friendships and dominated on the soccer field. As a young man, determination shoved aside every barrier as he is pursuing his MBA and maintaining employment with a home builder company.
Even while being detained, Erick is a continual blessing. He has helped some detainees get information to their families and prayed with others. It is utterly stunning to hear about the ways he is serving despite his situation.
Erick has built a life for himself here. His presence enriches the lives of his family, his friends, his church, and his community. He belongs here. Citizenship has been a dream deferred for Erick. Please help make it a reality.
