My Diabetic Journey 2025
Hello, my name is Dwayne Eubanks and I would like to tell you about my journey.
I found out I had diabetes in 2004. I developed very bad neuropathy, which led to a disease called Charcot.
When Charcot rears its ugly head, your bones turn to mush and crumble. My right foot started to become deformed and eventually collapsed.
I had my first major reconstruction to save my foot in June 2020. The surgeon at the time gave me a 50/50 chance of the surgery being successful. The surgery remained successful until recently.
I had another Charcot flare, which swelled my foot so badly it shifted the hardware, and I ended up having 3 cm of bone loss.
The first surgeon wanted to amputate, but I was not willing to throw in the towel so easily.
He realized I wanted to fight, and that is when he referred me to a specialist in West Palm Beach called the Paley Institute.
The surgeon agreed to do all he could to save my foot and leg. He originally told me I had a 30/70 chance, but that has increased a little after recently removing the old hardware on 4/9/2025.
I am in a fixator currently holding my bones together. I will be going on Monday for a clean-out surgery to make sure there is no current infection.
Then, the decision will be made to put in the new hardware. This will be a long year of recovery, wearing the fixator and attending many doctor appointments, which are 2 hours from where I live and many medical bills.
I am facing many challenges physically, mentally, and financially.
I will keep you updated on my progress and ask for your prayers and support.
God bless,
Dwayne
