Arrested for Caring: Help Cheree Peoples Fight Injustice and Reclaim Her Voice
“I was arrested for doing what any mother would do—care for my chronically ill daughter.”
My name is Cheree Peoples—a proud mother, lifelong caregiver, and the heart behind the Talk With Ms. Peoples™ podcast. For over two decades, I’ve dedicated my life to caring for my daughter, who lives with sickle cell disease and a stroke survivor. My journey has been featured in Daily Mail, HuffPost, and interviews with Judge Joe Brown and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for my work advocating for caregivers and fighting unjust policies.
But this time, the story is mine—and it’s not one I ever imagined telling.
In a shocking turn of events, I was arrested because my daughter missed too many school days—even though every absence was due to medical complications and well-documented by healthcare professionals.
This wasn’t neglect. It was caregiving.
This wasn’t truancy. It was survival.
Yet, I found myself in handcuffs, criminalized for loving my child through her illness.
My story is not mine alone.
Across the country, Black and brown mothers—especially caregivers of children with chronic illnesses—are being targeted, blamed, and punished under broken truancy laws that fail to see the full picture.
This arrest didn’t just threaten my freedom.
It threatened my livelihood, mental health, housing stability, and the very advocacy work that’s helped so many others.
I’ve been a voice for others. Now, I need you to be a voice for me.

I never wanted to be known for this. But I also can’t stay silent. I believe this painful moment has a greater purpose. With your help, I will turn this injustice into impact, and reclaim my power—not just for me, but for every parent who's been silenced for simply caring too much.
