On January 6th, Marco* (names changed) was leaving Lowe’s with construction materials for his job when he was detained by ICE. For days he was forced to endure the inhumane conditions in Baltimore’s detention center. After 9 days in what felt like hell, he was sent to Louisianna and then deported to Guatemala, devestating his wife, Isabel, and young son, Gabriel.

Gabriel turned 9 years old days after his father’s detention and had to endure a birthday without his loving father. Since his father’s detention, Gabriel has found it more difficult to concentrate in school and is often sad. Isabel, Marco’s wife, is now faced with navigating life after suddenly becoming a single parent and the sole provider for her family. Marco was the primary financial provider for the family and now the threat of ICE has prevented Isabel from feeling safe going to work. Now that she is the only parent here with Gabriel, she cannot risk being detained and deported as well. She faces the impossible decision between risking her safety and working to cover basic necessities. No parent should ever have to make this choice.

El 6 de enero, Marco* (nombre ficticio) salía de Lowe's con materiales de construcción para su trabajo cuando fue detenido por ICE. Durante días, se vio obligado a soportar las condiciones inhumanas del centro de detención de Baltimore. Tras 9 días en lo que parecía un infierno, fue enviado a Luisiana y luego deportado a Guatemala, devastando a su esposa, Isabel, y a su hijo pequeño, Gabriel.

Gabriel cumplió 9 años días después de la detención de su padre y tuvo que soportar un cumpleaños sin su querido padre. Desde entonces, a Gabriel le ha resultado más difícil concentrarse en la escuela y a menudo está triste. Isabel, la esposa de Marco, ahora se enfrenta a la difícil tarea de afrontar la vida tras convertirse repentinamente en madre soltera y el único sostén de su familia. Marco era el principal sostén económico de la familia y ahora la amenaza de ICE le ha impedido sentirse segura para ir a trabajar. Ahora que es la única madre aquí con Gabriel, no puede arriesgarse a ser detenida y deportada también. Se enfrenta a la difícil decisión de arriesgar su seguridad o trabajar para cubrir sus necesidades básicas. Ningún madre debería tener que tomar esta decisión.
