Life altering change can happen with one sentence. "We've found an abnormality in your test results." After two years of medically unexplained pain, my nephew, Shawnee Moore, one of the most stand-up "be there for you" people to walk the planet, was diagnosed with lung cancer. That was in the fall of 2024 and the road to healing and recovery appeared manageable. Although weak, and often failing to cover important procedures and medications, the insurance he had through his employer was better than nothing. That was until recently when they dropped him without explanation. We’ve researched and tapped in to every source possible. Some we got an approval, some we did not. But that's ok. Anything is better than nothing. In addition to paying for the treatments his insurance denied, he must also incur the full cost of $8000 CT scans, $9000 drug regiments, frequent visits to medical specialists and the day-to-day expenses of basic survival.
For someone who's always had an irreproachable work ethic and has proven so selfless when contributing to his employers' missions and bottom lines, the loss of health insurance seems particularly cruel during this time, Especially when you consider how unknown the future costs of his care will be or how long they will persist.
People gravitate and respond to other people who are warm, charismatic and spiritually generous. That's why Shawnee has friends and family who help with meals, getting back and forth to the doctor and are available at a moment's notice to respond to any pressing need. The anticipated financial cost of care for our nephew, brother, uncle, cousin, son, friend is a much higher hurdle, one that needs the help and kindness of the wider world.
Whatever you can give to defray this burden and promote Shawnee's physical well-being will be hugely appreciated.
