Stand by Pete: 35 Years of Dedication
Donation protected
Recently, Pete’s life changed in an unimaginable way. He was the victim of a brutal assault in his own home — a place that should have been safe. He suffered eight broken ribs, a cracked sternum, a broken nose & wrist, and a bleeding eardrum. While he's beginning the long process of physical recovery and still hospitalized, Pete now faces the overwhelming burden of medical bills, lost wages, and emotional trauma.
For more than 35 years, Pete has quietly been the heart and soul behind Carey’s Bar in Vermillion, SD. As the bar's dedicated maintenance man and janitor, Pete shows up before the sun rises — sweeping floors, fixing broken fixtures, and making sure everything runs smoothly. He does the hard, thankless work that most people never see. And he’s never once asked for recognition.
But Pete is far more than just a worker. He’s family. He’s the kind of man who gives without asking, who shows up even when he has little to give. Always kind. Always humble. Always willing to lend a hand, no matter the task or time of day. If something needed fixing, Pete was there — not because he had to be, but because that’s just who he is. He would give you the shirt off his back.
This fundraiser is our way of giving back to a man who has spent his entire life giving to others. We’re asking for your help — whether you're part of the Carey’s Bar family, a member of the Vermillion community, or simply someone who appreciates those who work behind the scenes. Your donation, no matter the size, will help cover Pete’s medical expenses, basic needs, and allow him the time to heal — physically and emotionally. Pete has always been there for us. Now, it’s our turn to be there for him.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and for sharing Pete’s story with others who may be moved to help.
