HER STORY

On September 22, 2020, “Nanny” as she is affectionately referred to by her grands and great-grands, was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. The cancer was discovered during treatment for kidney stones at University of Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama. Following tests, she was admitted to University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama for procedure commonly known as “Whipple” which involved removal of pancreas, gallbladder, appendix, portal vein, duodenum, and multiple lymph nodes. Near death, she survived the unbelievably painful surgery. After a difficult recovery period, IV chemotherapy was attempted and failed. She had a large saddle pulmonary embolus (blood clot of lung) encompassing both sides of her lungs as a result of the IV chemotherapy. Surgeons performed a pulmonary embolectomy requiring open chest recovery and healing. The surgeons also inserted an IVC filter to avoid any blood clots from going through her lungs to her heart. Because chemotherapy was no longer an option, her Oncologist ordered oral chemotherapeutic medication, slowing the growth of the disease. She has done fairly well on this agent considering treatment for painful kidney stones and other ongoing complications. She was, however, diagnosed with a second primary on her ovary resulting in removal of ovaries and tubes.

Fast forward almost five years until February 5, 2025, when a PET Scan showed disease progression with growth and spread to liver, multiple lymph nodes, multiple bones including head of femur (hip joint), thoracic spine, cervical spine, clavicle, and pelvic bone. Her chemotherapeutic medication had stopped working. She was placed on the third chemo medication with complications. The Oncologist reduced the dosage so we will see if she tolerates this round of treatment. She began experiencing confusion, dizziness, and shaking hands so this past week the doctor ordered MRI of the brain. The MRI showed the cancer has spread to her spinal fluid encompassing the spine and the brain. She has a scheduled appointment with Radiation Oncology next week to discuss treatment options.

Following the brain diagnosis, she was diagnosed with liver and rectum varices so she now lives in danger of hemorrhage.

Needless to say, prognosis is poor. Medical and living expenses have mounted during this 5 year period. Despite her medical difficulties she cared for her terminal husband who died in 2023 leaving her to assume their financial responsibilities. The cost of expensive medications, travel to and from numerous doctor appointments and other unexpected expenses have found her in need of financial help.

Nancy is a very sweet person. She is strong, kind, independent and always willing to help others. She has been through so much the past five years most of us cannot imagine. Now, she needs our help. Any donation will be appreciated.
