Stand by Marni: Let's Help Overcome This Accident Together

Hi everyone, I'm Marni and here is my story.

I was in Bangkok, Thailand at the end of February 2025, attending a UN Summit and advocating for trauma and psychosocial support for the refugees and migrants along the border of Myanmar and Thailand - best day of my career!

On the way back, I was on the back of a taxi motorbike with no helmet when a car hit us - the only thing I remember was waking up on the pavement with blood dripping down my face and not feeling my left leg - hands down the worst pain of my life. Rushed to the ER and 3 emergency surgeries later, a titanium pin surgery and I was admitted with a fractured pelvis, dislocated left femur, partially collapsed lung, and concussion. 3 weeks confined to a hospital bed, leg traction weight therapy, and my recovery is about a 2-4 month journey. It's a miracle I am alive, and I am grateful for all the incredible care and community support thus far. People are living Angels.

As someone who dedicates their life to helping others, I have, more times than most, been on the giving end. Now, I find myself on the receiving end and in a similar position as my recovery and post-recovery care are way longer than I expected. I also only have a PhD student medical plan, which doesn't cover any of it.

So this is an ask to help me heal and recover, to re-learn to walk again, process this near-death experience, and receive the care I need holistically in a foreign country. Luckily, a majority of medical cost for surgeries and medicine was covered by the driver, although I am out of work for 4 months, don't have permission to fly and have a huge amount of physical therapy and at home care to find. Whew!
