- Monday September 30th at 2:09 in the morning I received the call no one ever wants to receive. It was my daughter, Liz, sobbing on the other end and my heart instantly dropped as I was startled awake. She was awoken by a loud bang in the middle of the night to find VJ, her other half, unconscious in a pool of blood on the garage floor. After arriving at Community Hospital, VJ was airlifted by helicopter to the University of Chicago in order to save his life. Upon arrival, his neurological assessment was poor and he was completely unresponsive for seven days. He was diagnosed with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, multiple facial and orbital fractures and a rupture to his left eye. VJ spent 25 nights at The University of Chicago during which he underwent four surgeries and multiple other procedures. Liz never left his side, night after night. He was then transferred via ambulance to a local inpatient rehabilitation facility to begin a very long journey of recovery. He has since made an extraordinary amount of progress but still has surgeries ahead of him and a challenging road of rehabilitation to face.
We are starting this GoFundMe campaign because we know it is not within either of them to ask for help. This fundraiser will help cover the large medical expenses that are building up while they are also trying to survive on only one income. Any amount you can contribute will make a great impact.
