Hi, my name is Kallum. I’m trans and I used to service in the U.S. Navy, I’m currently undergoing some big life transitions. After five years of service, I was pressured into choosing voluntary separation under the threat that if I didn’t, I could lose my military benefits, face a dishonorable discharge, or be labeled a security risk by the DOD.

It wasn’t a real choice.

I’m now preparing to leave the military with no income, no guaranteed access to healthcare, and no safety net. Many of us trans service members are fighting back to get the benefits we are entitled to.

As a trans person, this hits especially hard. losing access to the gender-affirming care I was promised for serving my country makes me feel like I put in all this work for nothing. The VA and federal programs do not cover trans health care, and I’m now expected to navigate it all on my own. Paying for surgeries I already had appointments for and had to cancel due the pressure from our current administration.
