Stand by David and Lisa Against Cancer

It is with great sadness that this Go Fund Me campaign is being launched. The launch of this campaign means that David Mackey’s cancer has progressed in such a way that it is no longer financially sustainable to carry the cost alone. For those of you that do not know, David was diagnosed in October 2023 with a very rare Uveal Melanoma. A nasty fall shortly after this diagnosis led to a collapsed lung, and then a pulmonary embolism which caused David to spend 21 days in the hospital, 16 of which were in the ICU. The fall and subsequent issues delayed David’s Uveal Melanoma treatment and because of this, the tumor in his eye caused his retina to detach and a full eye enucleation was the only course of treatment left available. Within two months of David’s eye being removed, he received a perfectly matching beautiful green glass eye that he continues to use while flirting with his nurses. Follow up care in December 2024 showed that the cancer metastasized into Stage 4 Melanoma in David’s bones (spine, ribs, pelvis, both femurs and lungs). In February 2025, it was determined that immunotherapy would be the next course of treatment to attack the many tumors inside David’s bones. Unfortunately the immunotherapy rendered David diabetic, a diagnosis identified only after David was rushed back to the hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis. Another fall resulted in a broken hip and David receiving a partial hip replacement, but the good news is the new hip has helped David’s slow dancing rhythm!

As you can see, the prognosis has not been in David’s favor for quite some time. During this time, David has been unable to continue to work as a home remodeler and decorator. Ever grateful for David’s longtime fiancé and main caregiver, it has now proved too much for Lisa Johnston to continue to handle on her own.

Funds collected will be used in the short term for a $15,000 orthodontic procedure David needs to repair bone loss and to fight infections. God willing, any amount collected beyond this amount will go towards David’s continued medical care and expenses.
