On January 12, 2025, David "Hooch" Lenear slumped over after a routine Sunday morning. Recognizing he was in trouble, his son performed CPR non-stop for 16 minutes until the EMTs arrived. David had to be shocked several times before they were able to get a pulse. He was then transported to the hospital, but during transport, he had a significant seizure due to a stroke.
By the time doctors were able to speak with us, they had put him on a ventilator under sedation. Since they were not equipped to evaluate his condition, they transferred him to an affiliated hospital that could handle both the cardiac arrest and the brain stem damage from the stroke/seizure. After several days, they weaned him off sedation to determine his ability to protect his airway and, with a positive reaction, decided to extubate him. Within 24 hours, he had another seizure and coded again. Back on the ventilator he went... and within another 24 hours, testing was positive for severe sepsis and E. coli. This was after they determined he had already had pneumonia from the onset. Doctors and nurses were astonished by his medical state, commenting he was the sickest person in the 500+ bed hospital at the time. Even his pupillary hippus, a condition where the pupils pulsate with the heartbeat indicating possible neurological disorders, had never been witnessed by most of the nurses. Miraculously, he fought hard and after another week was strong enough to breathe on his own. He is still in the hospital gaining bodily strength every day. However, the damage done by the stroke has significantly changed his life. An MRI shows 30 brain lesions, half of which are located on the brain stem.
David is not able to provide for his family and will need 24-hour-a-day assistance, at least for several months. Our prayers are that through rehabilitation and time, David can heal enough to lead the life a husband and father was meant to lead. Any help friends, family, or sponsors can contribute, including prayers, emotional support, experiences, or medical suggestions, are welcomed and greatly appreciated by the loving family of David "Hooch" Lenear.
