Stand by Claudia

3/17/25 Update:

Mike Venable is Claudia’s spouse. Mike has given Joel Campbell (who is a like a brother to Claudia) permission to be in charge of the GoFundMe. We are so beyond grateful for everyone who has donated and supported Claudia throughout this time.

1/27/25 Update on Claudia:

We were able to see Claudia this past week and she was doing really good, especially compared to the last time we saw her. She was able to respond with short answers. She was restless and still very strong. Most of her answers are cuss words , but we see it as a miracle that she is able to respond at all. It was so good to be able to see her and how much she has improved. She still has a long way to go, and we continue to pray for her recovery. She has physical therapy each day, and speech therapy as well. She got her trach tube out last Wednesday, so we are hopeful her speech will continue improving with that obstacle out of the way.

Please continue to pray for Claudia. The family is hopeful she will be able to improve enough to move back to southern Utah and be closer to her family and friends soon. For now it is difficult to get up and visit with her as much as we would like to. We are hopeful to get up there again before too long and look forward to seeing the improvement she is making.

A big thank you to the community who has followed along with us on this horrendous journey. We really appreciate the prayers, love, and support we have felt through all this.

1/14/2025 Update on Claudia

Her white blood cell count is stable, it’s at 9 which doesn’t indicate infection, at least not bacterial infection.

They were able to do some exercises standing up. They are trying to get her strength back in her lower body. She had more strength in her left side, almost no weight bearing in the right at this point. She still struggles to follow some commands, but when asked to stand up she is making attempts to do so. Please continue to pray for her, we know she is able to feel those prayers each day. Thank you.

01/07/25 Update on Claudia

They are moving Claudia up north to a facility that focuses on rehab therapy, to help her get stronger. They have the resources Claudia needs to continue to get her the help she needs.

Saturday Jan 11th will be 2 weeks since her mouth has been wired shut and they are able to take out the wires and put rubber bands in so Claudia can hopefully be able to start speaking. They will most likely do that at the rehabilitation facility.

We are asking everyone to continue to pray for Claudia and her recovery process, it will be a long road, but Claudia is so so strong and a fighter and truly has faced so many things in the last 17 days, but there has been so many little miracles that happen that have been amazing. So continue to pray for her and I will do updates when there is more info to pass on. We are hopeful this rehab center will be able to help her tremendously and this will be more their specialty.

I have been focusing on all the positive aspects of this with our updates, but the hard truth is that things aren’t always 100 percent positive. There are difficult things that are going to be in Claudia’s life and we are hopeful that these will be lessened in time. We have chosen to focus all our efforts in keeping things positive, and we know that will help her in her recovery. Claudia is a miracle. We’ve said it before and we will continue to say it. She has many guardian angels watching out for her and we pray they will continue to aid in her recovery. We are hoping for a full recovery, but we also need to be aware of the possibility of her not reaching that full recovery to be who she once was. We have been overwhelmed at the outpouring of love from this community. Thank you so much for all the help that has been, and continues to be, rendered on Claudia’s behalf. We can’t thank everyone enough. We have felt the prayers and love as we know Claudia has as well. We won’t be able to be with her everyday when she goes up north, but we know she will be in good hands and we will visit as often as possible to keep her spirits up and help encourage her recovery.

01/03/25 Update on Claudia

They are focusing on rehab therapy daily for Claudia, she is so strong and such a fighter.

It will be a long road to recovery for Claudia but right now there is nothing really changing and she doesn’t need any more surgeries. I will continue to post random updates, I will be posting pictures of her on her instagram page stand_by_claudia if anyone wants to those. Please continue to pray for her, we can feel them and we are so beyond grateful for them.

01/02/25 Update on Claudia

Claudia is doing well today, Claudia is doing rehab daily and has been doing good with that. They have a service puppy that is going to come in her room tomorrow. We are excited for the dog to come visit her as we know Claudia loves dogs and hopefully that will help raise her spirits

They took her tracheotomy tube out, Her oxygens doing good she is completely off the breathing machine.

They want to keep days and night separate, so they can keep her strong for rehab during the day. They will help her do this by keeping the lights brighter during the day, they will try to keep her awake, talk to her more and try to move her around a little bit more. They will keep it darker during the night, and try to let her get more sleep and rest.

01/01/2025 Update on Claudia

She’s breathing on her own for the most part. The breathing machine is hooked up to her as a backup just in case. When they try to get her to withdraw on her right side, she is feeling it by responding with her left leg and arm, but we are hopeful she will start responding with her right side.

The Physical Therapists (PT) came in and was able to help her sit up in the bed. They got her up and she was strong with movements. They gave her commands. She attempted to follow but was unable to follow the commands correctly. It is good she was responding, we just need to work on comprehending those commands. She was very responsive with her eyes, opening them, and attempting to focus on anything. We couldn’t get eye contact yet from her, but we are early in the PT stages .

The Nurses have been so great helping Claudia get and stay comfortable. It is very comforting for the family to know she is in good, caring hands. The nurses were able to wash Claudia’s hair today and that was quite the chore. We are so grateful for their compassion with her as they did so. Claudia seemed happy and we think she enjoyed getting her hair washed. Afterwards, her friends were able to braid her hair, which was really nice to help Claudia feel pampered. Having her hair up will also help with rehab, so they don’t worry about her hair as they are trying to keep all the tubes and hoses and cords out of the way; it is one less thing for the nurses to worry about.

We are overwhelmed with the support we have felt from the community, we were able to talk to Claudia and let her know she has a whole bunch of people following her story and praying and rooting for her each day. Thank you so much for your love and support, we have felt it and we are sure Claudia has as well. The road ahead is going to be a long one. 12/31/24 Update on Claudia

This morning they tried to wake Claudia up and have her follow commands. She was restless, but was unable to correctly respond to commands. Seemed as if she was trying, but unable to follow the correct commands. She still has good strength. Her right side is still struggling to get movement, she is able to wiggle her toes and raise her arm on that side but not much more than that. They are a little concerned with a few things associated with the stroke, they are going to go in today and do a cerebral angiogram. The stroke she had, they think, is from traumatic spasm. It is unclear if there is still brain tissue they can save, the stroke happened, they are trying all the medicines they can. If the cerebral angiogram goes well they can then focus on rehab instead of the trauma. A cerebral angiogram will give them a 3d X-rays to best understand what’s going on with the blood vessels. The procedure would be diagnostic. They are still giving her pain meds and keeping her as comfortable as possible

12/30/24 Update on Claudia

She is off sedation completely, she is on pain medication to keep her fever under control, and all the pain she must be feeling they were going to put a picc line in this morning. Also a blood pressure line so they could monitor her blood pressure more frequently than every ten minutes. She had a stroke, we are not sure if it was yesterday or the day before, she needs an MRI to get a better look. They are giving her heparin and her seizure medicine to try to help prevent anymore strokes and seizures. Claudia has a small hole in her heart (they said everyone is born usually with a hole in their heart and it repairs on its own.) We are not sure if she had a hole in her heart before the accident or if it happened because of the accident. The hole should repair on its own but they might have to put a patch on it, if it doesn’t close on its own. I am not sure when they will do another ultrasound on her heart but when they do I will keep you updated. Claudia has two blood clots, one in each leg, Claudia had a strep pneumonia, they have her on antibiotics and are monitoring that as well. They have been sucking crap out of her tracheotomy tube, which she doesn’t like, but could you imagine how much pain she is in. Claudia has been so strong and sometimes it takes two people to hold her to get her blood drawn because she is so strong. She hasn’t moved her right side very much, but her left side is full in strong. It’s been so hard to have to watch Claudia be in so much pain and really can’t do anything to help her, she is slowly waking up and when we ask her to give us a thumbs up or wiggle her toes, she does. One of the nurses said it is just day to day to find out more of what will happen and how she will do. So she is beyond strong.

I would like to take a minute to thank everybody for their unconditional support, love and prayers through this time! I would like to thank the police officers and highway patrol officers who were at the car accident scene, the EMT’s who helped Claudia, anyone who helped Claudia get out of the truck and to whoever called 911, we are so beyond grateful for the wonderful community we have and the people who are willing to help Claudia when she needed it the most.

We would love to thank all the wonderful doctors and nurses at Dixie Regional Medical Center in the ICU floor, everyone has been so sincere and so kind and loving to answer any questions we have had about Claudia, and they have explained the procedures so well and taken the time and that means the world to us, and it gives us comfort to know that Claudia is in good hands. We know that she is loved.

Claudia is so beyond strong and she is a fighter EVERY DAY, she keeps FIGHTING and I will continue to update you as we know more.

12/29/24 Update on Claudia.

Claudia did well through the night.

They think she might have had a seizure or a possible stroke this morning, they had her do a cat scan to get more info, we are waiting to hear back the results. Claudia is running a fever, and her heart beat has been up and down, she has opened her eyes multiple times today, but is still pretty out of it. Please keep her in your prayers today, also that the doctors can know what to do to help her with her seizures. She needs to do a couple of scans to figure out what all is going on. Claudia is a fighter! When I know more about the test results I will update here again. Please please add her to your prayers.

12/28/24 Update on Claudia.

The surgery went great, they put a plate in her lower jaw, they did wire her mouth shut, she will have the wires in for about 2 weeks, unfortunately they couldn’t put the breathing tube in through her nose, so they had to do a tracheotomy, this was the safest way, with everything shes been through no reason to risk her airway with the breathing tube, which she will only have a little scar from, the benefit from that is they will be able to bring her out of sedation earlier, it won’t be today. She will still be sedated, the good thing is with the tube, she won’t need as much sedation. In a few weeks she will be able to start talking. It’s a miracle that she will only have her jaw wired shut for 2 weeks. Claudia also didn’t have to have her face re-constructed so that is good news as well. So overall the surgery went really well and there was no complications.

12/27/24 Update on Claudia.

She has been responding to commands, when the sedation has been lowered. They are keeping her relaxed and comfortable before her next surgery tomorrow. She is still running a fever, so they are monitoring that. They are keeping her pretty sedated until after her mandible reconstruction, then with the doctor’s approvals they will be able to take out the intubation tubes and hopefully that will help ease the pain in her face. Update on Claudia, she had her surgery today, they said it is a really rare surgery/injury and they don’t usually do it very often, most people don’t survive. A lot of the ligaments were torn connecting her spine to her head so we had to fuse that together. How we did that was we put screws in the back of her skull with a plate, it’s a little round plate so that’s connected and it has a connector that rods connect to then the rods go down her spine then he put screws in her spine at multiple areas. The rod connects that together.. he did the skull into c1 and then c1 into c2. Should have a little movement still. Younger girls are more flexible so she may have more movement than others. This is a very rare injury. In the spine world they don’t see this injury very often, normally when they get this injury, they die. Because it tore all the ligaments around the base if her skull, attaches to the cervica l spine, the ligaments were torn all the way around. Her head was only hanging on by her skin and spinal cord. Tore all the ligaments between two bones. it’s called a Cranial Cervical Dissociation. Or an internal decapitation. Very dangerous injury and usually on site they bleed to death. Very rare surgery. The screws go in right next to an artery that’s encased in bone and there’s not much room for the screws to go in. More dangerous than other surgeries. Surgery went well, no complications and hardly any blood loss.

Best thing we can do now is to get her up and move her. They are going to try to get her off intubation and get the tube out. ICU wants to make sure her lungs are good enough to be able to do that and that is the next step.

She is set to have Mandible surgery Saturday morning to re construct her jaw

This injury tears the ligaments and arteries that go to the brain and usually causes them to bleed to death. Such a miracle that she survived this.

This surgery stabilized her so she is now able to sit up

They will intubate through her nose for the mandible surgery. They will now be able to get her up and try to get her into a chair

12/25/24 Update on Claudia,

She’s very strong today and moving all arms and legs. She still is intubated with the vent, but she is breathing on her own with it. They are keeping her sedated as she begins thrashing around and they don’t want her to cause any more damage to her fractures. They are hopeful of not needing to do neck surgery, but it still depends on many factors, waiting on the doctors for a more definitive plan. She may have pneumonia so they are starting an antibiotic and doing bloodwork to check and see if she has an infection. The goal today is to keep her comfortable so she can rest and keep getting strong.

12/24/24 Update on Claudia, neurosurgery discussed the MRI from the day before and it primarily showed Diffuse Axonal Injury (which means she hit her head pretty hard) which is to be expected. She transitioned to a lighter form of sedation and was able to give us a thumbs up on both sides which shows us her strength is equalizing (which made neurosurgery very happy). She’s strong and determined and does not like the vent.

12/23/24 Update on Claudia, she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral edema, a cervical spine fracture, multiple facial fractures, and multiple contusions. They were able to turn off her sedation this morning and she was able to follow some commands. She is still in critical condition but we are hopeful she will continue to make improvements each day.

12/22/24 We are trying to raise money to help Claudia Gutierrez Venable. She has currently moved back to St. George, UT, and she recently got a new job. Claudia was on her way home from shopping, and we believe that she had a seizure while she was driving. She drove off the side of the I-15, flipped the truck over 30 feet in the air. and landed upside down. Claudia is currently in the ICU in a coma. They feel like it will be at least a week in a coma until her swelling can go down. Her jaw is completely fractured and will need to be surgically repaired. She doesn’t have insurance and the family is afraid of what the cost will be at this time. We are hoping to help the family out by taking some of the stress involved away and relieving what pressure we can to help them begin to heal. Thank you in advance for anything you are able to help with. All the money raised will go to Claudia and her medical bills.
