Stand by Alisa

Four weeks ago life was normal for Alisa and she was an active, healthy, and vibrant woman. On August 3rd, her pain became so unbearable that she agreed to go to the hosiptal even though she had no health insurance and the thought of the bill left her in tears as she took the ambulance ride. Once at the emergency room, doctors ordered a CT scan and an ultrasound. After a long nerve- racking wait, with supportive family members, doctors informed Alisa and her family that they had found a large mass on her ovary and that she could possibly have Ovarian Cancer.
Alisa was referred to an OBGYN and was granted an emergency appointment due to the severity of the findings. Three days later after seeing the OBGYN she was referred to Richard A. Henson cancer center due to having all of the characteristics of Ovarian Cancer. She was immediately seen by Dr. Im and the staff was extremely helpful . Dr. Im was extremely concerned because Alisa was in excruciating pain and had not been able to eat for 9 days. After Alisa's pleaing for Dr. Im to personally care for her instead of his colleagues he agreed. Alisa was informed that she would need emergency surgery to remove the mass and determine if it was cancerous. Due to her amount of pain and weakness, Alisa was admitted to Mercy hospital in Baltimore this past Monday. Doctors needed to ensure that her pain was managed and that she was strong enough to endure surgery. Alisa's emergency surgery will be on August 16th if all goes according to plan.
Alisa and her husband David owned a small business and have been self-employed for most of thier life. David has been a commerical fisherman his whole life and works on the water. His busiest season is crabbing season but he has not been able to work due to his wife's illness and his boat breaking down. Although David looses time on the water to be with his wife, there is no other place he would rather be. Alisa and David have been married for 33 years and have two beautiful children together.
Being self-employed had its challenges and Alisa and Davis were unable to afford high health care rates. Alisa's emergency surgery will cost 18,900 dollars and the family scrambled to come up with 2,000 dollars in order for doctors to agree to perform the surgery. Mercy Hospital originally wanted the full amount to be paid but after pleaing and crying, they agreed to 2000 down. Alisa's family came together to come up with the 2000 dollars and donations made the surgery possible. Alisa has incurred other bills for her emergency visits, doctors visits and will continue to incurr bills after her surgery for care, doctors visits, medication, and cancer treaments if needed. These bills have and will continue to cause a financial burden to Alisa and her family.
After exploring multiple avenues for assistance the family has been unsuccessful due to various reasons. Asking for help is unfamiliar territory for the Bishop family. However, it is apparent that they absolutely need it at this time. The Bishop family does undertand that other families may be also struggling financially and not able to donate moniterally. On behalf of the family we are asking for you to open your hearts and surround Alisa with prayer and love even if you are not able to donate moniterally.
