STAMMA - British Stammering Association IN Hospitality
Donation protected
Hi, I’m Harley Sanders!
I’ve been working in hospitality for over 11 years as a DJ, currently playing at Neon Cactus and Green Room in Leeds. Now, I’m taking on a new challenge by participating in the Leeds IBE (Industry Boxing Event) to raise awareness and funds for STAMMA (The British Stammering Association) – a cause that’s close to my heart.
Stammering has been a part of my life since childhood. I had to attend speech and language therapy as a kid, which I actually enjoyed! However, when I turned 19, my stammer returned, and at times, it even left me mute. As an adult, having to relearn how to speak was tough—definitely less fun than when I was younger. Thankfully, I had friends who helped keep my spirits up, often with a bit of humour, which made all the difference.
These days, I’m more at peace with it. If I stammer or go quiet, it doesn’t bother me as much. But I know that many people still don’t fully understand stammering or how to react to it. Ironically, while stammering can make it hard to get your words out, we all still deserve to be heard, even if it takes a few attempts.
STAMMA’s mission is to stand up for people who stammer, fight discrimination, and ensure access to support like speech and language therapy for those who need it. They’re here to help the public understand that stammering isn’t a sign of being shy, drunk, dishonest, nervous, or weak—it’s simply how some of us speak.
I know firsthand how difficult it can be to get support, especially when services are limited. It can leave people feeling isolated and without a voice. If I can contribute in any way—whether it’s raising awareness or helping fund more therapy centres—I’m proud to do my part.
Thank you so much for your support!
