It might be naive, but I never imagined that I or someone in my life would need the assistance of a GoFundMe page. But   I do, and when someone needs help, I feel the responsibility to step up and do anything I can to do so.

Meet Maylin Selene Chavez. We call her Selene (the beautiful, healthy looking, woman in the red top), an extremely close family friend of my ours (The Piccirillo’s), my mom’s right hand lady, our second mom, for over 20 years.  Chances are, if you know my family and have been to my house, you have met the angel that is Selene. She is an amazing mom to her daughters, Emily & Melissa, and loving wife to her husband, Edwin. She and her husband would do ANYTHING for us, or anyone, when a need arises. Now it’s time to return the favor.

Life threw their family a major curveball when Selene was diagnosed with Stage 4 Abdominal Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. However, Selene has not been exposed asbestos, and the abdominal form is extremely rare: less than 500 cases per year - if that. Selene has to travel to New Jersey to visit a surgeon that knows enough about this type of cancer, to determine the next phase of treatment.

To make matters more complicated, Selene’s insurance dropped her when she discovered the cancer diagnoses. She is seeking alternate coverage, but is currently paying out of pocket.

Without treatment, the doctors have given Selene about 12 months to live. With treatment, she is looking at 2-5 years. I am determined to give Selene and her family a minimum of 5, high quality years of life.

I urge you, your family, and your friends, from the bottom of my heart, to give anything you can. Consider donating the amount of your morning coffee. Anything helps.

My family and close friends are doing everything we can to help support Selene and her family, but it doesn’t measure up to what could be provided by the support of everyone else.

All donations will go to Selene and her family and used for: medical expenses (including any form of treatment, surgery, hospital stays, medicine, etc.) travel/hotel/food expenses (for ex. When in New Jersey for treatment), really any issue that arises as a result of her diagnosis.

Selene has asked me to manage the money for her( can provide proof of this). I am currently having the funds transferred to my savings account so that there is no way the donated money can be used/spent from my personal checking account. I am in the process of creating a separate account specifically for this money, so that it is clear that it is not being used unless I am giving it to Selene. I am going to essentially pay for Selene's medical expenses by writing checks so that it is clear that the money is being used for the right reasons.
