This GoFundMe was organized by her son Dennis on behalf of Stacy Romero, also known as the best Mom in the world ❤️ She is an independent woman who works two jobs and is the sole provider for herself and her pup Bree. She's always been one to help when you're in a bind with whatever you might need, never thinking twice about taking time out of her day even between jobs to help out, and even in her spare time you can usually find her helping a friend with an odd job or donating plasma to help those who need it most. This past week however, her whole routine was flipped on its head and her life would be changed, and it all started with a stubbed pinky toe.
About two weeks ago, my mother stubbed her toe after getting home from work and thought nothing of it. A few days later, it was turning purple and radiating pain, and this past Monday (3/7) the pain was so severe she was forced to leave her shift early and made her way to St. David's Austin emergency room in tears. What originally seemed like a simple stubbed toe turned into a toe that was completely necrotic, caused by a diabetic ulcer which had found its way there due to the trauma. Further imaging revealed damaged arteries in her leg blocking blood flow, which was thought to be the cause of the ulcer and would need surgery to implant stents to correct the issue. The surgery was carried out on Tuesday (3/7) in the afternoon, during which there were some complications. As they went in to implant the stents, they realized it wasn't just the arteries blocking blood flow, but a series of blood clots as well. As they attempted to remove the blood clots on the fly during the same operation however, her Oxygen saturation dropped dangerously low and they were forced to do what they could and finish prematurely. They were able to get the clots out, but it left my mother in the ICU for a few days on a ventilator while she recuperated. She finally was able to breathe without the help of the ventilator and today(Friday 3/11) she was moved to a normal room and out of the ICU. She is out of the woods in terms of her immediate health, but the implications from her hospitalization and subsequent diagnosis are extensive.
At this point, she is still in the hospital awaiting final clearing by her doctors in the coming days we hope, but she will be immobile and unable to work for at least another month, further compounding onto the time she has been out of work this past week as well. Covid hit us all hard, my Mom included unfortunately. As a result she has little in the way of savings and no viable way to afford the blood thinners she was prescribed and will have to take indefinitely, which along with her various other prescriptions will cost north of $600 per month. This is on top of monthly bills coming due soon for which she has had no paycheck and will have no paycheck for at least another 1-2 months. She risks losing her home and her only mode of transportation, along with the uncertainty regarding being able to afford her medications, out of pocket medical costs, and subsequent specialist visits to a podiatrist and hematologist for further monitoring. She has been diagnosed with a blood disorder that will need to be monitored closely and will need extensive medical care going forward. Together, we ask that if you have the means and can find it in your heart to help my mother to keep a roof over her head, keep her only mode of transportation for her doctors visits, and help reduce her stress of affording her bare living necessities and medications while she cannot work, it would mean the absolute world to us. We're all human and we all need a little help now and again when life throws a curveball; Anything you can spare is greatly appreciated, be it a donation or even just some kind words or sharing this page and helping spread the word that we desperately could use your help. For transparency, on our end any amount you donate will go directly to help cover her monthly living expenses while she recovers, follow up appointments, medications and out of pocket medical costs. Any monetary donation will help to ease some of her financial burden so she may have the time to heal while her body recovers. We ask for your thoughts and/or prayers, and thank y'all so much from the bottom of my heart for even just taking the time to read this.
