Our beloved Stacie Burgess has taken some tough hits this winter, but none have been so devastating as the catastrophic medical bills she's incurred as a result of her heart horse, Nadia, coming down with colitis. Let's lend Stacie - and Nadia - a hand in coming back, better than ever, from this scary torrent of medical bills!
I don't need to tell you how wonderful, amazing, and rare Stacie and her wild, wholehearted friendship is; If you're reading this, you know! And chances are, you know the story of Nadia, her 24-year old fantasy-come-to-life mare who, in addition to being Stacie's equine soulmate, has touched the hearts of countless people through her dedicated presence as a therapy horse at Forward Stride.
Before Stacie had to deal with Nadia's colitis, she was already on her back foot - LITERALLY. She received an injury to her knee that has left her needing total reconstructive surgery to repair the damaged and destroyed ligaments in the joint, in addition to being buried by ER and diagnostic bills. Not someone to be without an emergency fund and always someone to plan ahead, this injury really drained that financial reserve, but not before the second wave hit.
The financial strain from Nadia's colitis episode and her subsequent stay at OSU, plus the impending bills for her recovery care and further diagnostic testing, is mounting. In Stacie's own words, here is the breakdown for Nadia's bills:
"Nadia's OSU bill is $2,200. She had a mild colic episode a few weeks before that was part of this- that was $200, plus the emergency vet call for this colitis episode was another $200. The recommended supplements (vet recommended probiotics, pre biotics, & having pro-bios on hand) are going to run about $250. She needs further diagnostics to confirm it's not a tumor in her intestinal tract, which will run approx $800-$1,200. Hauling her was about $100, special hay will be about $350/ton... I should be back on track by the time she's done with that first load. I'm planning to buy by the bale till I can order a full load... It's basically $2,700 owed & looking at another $1,800 to resolve this. Freakin $4,500!! Gahhh!! I hadn't added it up yet!"
Stacie is a wonderful friend, a vital part of our equestrian community, and a heck of an awesome human being. I know that she'd bend over backwards to help a friend in need, and so, I'm asking you to do the same for her! Let's lend a hand or two to ease the burden of her current hardship. And if not for Stacie, do it for Nadia, her unicorn <3
