St Peters, Guildford NHS Support Campaign

We have the skills, equipment and capacity in our school to manufacture essential PPE for our NHS workers and front-line staff.

My name is Toby Miller and I am the Headteacher of St Peter's Catholic Secondary School in Guildford.   During  recent weeks we have seen our NHS and front-line care workers make regular pleas for PPE due to the acute need and, in some areas and organisations an acute shortage of equipment.

We are able to use our equipment at school to cut the three parts of a mask/visor and we have the staff with the technical expertise to manage and maintain the process.  What we need are the raw materials to make the masks.  At full capacity we think we can make around 80 masks per day and are appealing to our parents and families to support us by contributing to the cost of the materials.  We are also exploring the potential for the manufacture of medical gowns and/or scrubs that we think we will be able to produce, starting in the next few days.  This is a way we, as the St Peter's School community, can contribute directly to the support for our vital NHS and wider medical services.  We have contacted a variety of health care organisations including hospitals, care homes and health centres and the demand is overwhelming.

The intended recipients of the PPE we can produce would be NHS workers and those directly in need of PPE whilst working with patients suffering with the coronavirus.  These include those working directly in hospitals, especially on Covid wards and also care home workers where there is currently a sever shortage of appropriate PPE.  Please help us to help them.

Staff in our technology department have manufactured the design you see above which meets the specification required for NHS PPE.  They are willing to dedicate time in school to manufacture and assemble the items and production is under way.  Due to the fantastic level of support we have received for our campaign we are able to increase production of this vital equipment with the purchase of additional specialist cutters and printers.  Our goal is to produce 120 visors per day and we will start manufacture of hospital scrubs on the 16th April.  Due to the staff that we have access to we will be able to deliver the PPE directly to where it is most needed within 48 hours of its production.
