Calling all friends of St. Mary's.
St. Mary's Church, Athlunkard St. is a majestic architectural feature of the urban topography of Limerick City, located in one of the most historical parts of Limerick. This church designed by Architects Ashlin and Colman has stood proudly here since 1932. It replaced the 1749 Penal Church on the same site.
Both externally and internally, it is a beautiful testimony to how our past generations gave glory to God. It remains an iconic building in the area of King's Island and it holds a place of deep affection and importance in the hearts of all who associate with "The Parish".
Last year we completed the repair of a significant area of the boundary ironwork railing, and that, along with the incredible garden that surrounds the church, has made it a place of beauty and invitation. We are indebted to the incredible work of our parishioner, Noel Hayes, who over the years has transformed the grounds of St. Mary's with his amazing garden.
We are now undertaking a significant project to steam clean the masonry of the church exterior as well as the boundary piers and walls. The method being used has been approved by Limerick City and County Council Conservation Department, as St. Mary's is a listed building.
The work is being undertaken by a specialist company in Co. Clare, called Irish Natural Stone. We hope to restore the brightness of the masonry by removing the significant grime which has built up over the years, especially on the distinctive tower. We hope, when completed, the building will stand out, continuing to do what was intended by those who built it, to give glory to God, and that it will, for many generations, be a place of welcome to all in good times and in sad.
The cost is significant, standing at €57,674. It is to allay this significant cost that we are making this appeal, for anyone with a fondness or affection for St. Mary's to help. Any donation you can make will contribute greatly towards our goal, and may we thank you in advance for your generosity and thoughtfulness.
