St. Ann's Lacrosse
Donation protected
Three years ago, I created a lacrosse program for St. Ann The Personal School in East Harlem. Lacrosse has been a huge part of my life and I was surprised to learn how few school districts have access to the sport. Or any organized sports for that matter. I selected St. Ann school as the pilot school and worked with the school principal to introduce an 8-week clinic for 3-8th graders over the past three fall seasons and last spring. Our team of coaches (fellow high school students) are running two clinics at St Ann: one for 3-5th graders (introduction to lax and stick skills) and one for 6-8th graders (building on existing skills and playing scrimmages). Additionally, we are reaching out to other K-8 schools in the area to expand this program for next season.
St Ann's student body is 99% minority, 60% receive financial aid, 55% qualify for special services and 100% are classified as below the Federal poverty line. (The entire school gets free breakfast, lunch, and snack). This means they have no room in their budget for after-school activities or sports teams. Our goal was to change that.
The last three years have been very successful. We taught 30 boys and girls the basics of the sport and engaged them in scrimmages and small games. We are the ONLY lacrosse program in Harlem for kids who aren't in high school. It is our goal to create a small league with the ability to field games and to continue to expand this small foothold for lacrosse into East Harlem. But to do this we still need additional funding for more equipment, to pay for field space, and cover the rest of our expenses (balls, goals, uniforms, mouth guards, etc.).
Our team at Mamaroneck High School has been a huge help in coaching and logistics. We have also run equipment drives in the area with our local lacrosse programs. However, in order to keep expanding and building the program, we are going to need to raise more money. Any and all donations will make a huge impact on the kids and on the future of the program, and we thank you in advance for any support!
