St Alban's runs The Atlantic Coast Challenge

Hello,

Thank you for visiting my page.

My name is Louise and I'm currently a TA and parent at St. Albans Catholic Primary School, Denaby Main.  St Alban's is a voluntary aided Catholic school situated in one of the ten most deprived areas in Doncaster that now offers education to children from aged 2 to 11 in our school nursery and primary classes.

I am passionate about raising money for the school because our children really do deserve the best, and that’s what we all aim to give them which is often difficult on a tight budget.  I firmly believe that wherever a child is born and educated they all deserve equal access to quality resources and education.

Our school desperately need to purchase more phonics and Read, Write Inc equipment to offer our children the best start on their educational journey.  Being an able and confident reader is essential for all children to achieve across the curriculum and in life.  Read Write Inc. is a well researched and proven approach to teaching literacy skills to 4 to 9-year olds that creates fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. It integrates phonics with comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting, using engaging partner work and drama.

Due to the pandemic, the detrimental impact on the learning and progress for all children is huge and in order to allow our children to make rapid progress to catch up their lost learning (approximately a quarter of their educational career so far), St Alban’s now need to increase the capacity for teaching RWIphonics to our younger children by purchasing more teaching and learning resources.  This will mean we can fully stock the increased number of phonics groups so that we can provide high quality education and bring our youngest learners back on track after this difficult start to their school lives.

Data from 50,000 pupils and a survey of schools across England have shown an increased number of four- and five-year-olds needing help with language.  Evidence also shows poor speech development can have long-term effects on learning.  The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) research suggests the measures taken to combat the pandemic have deprived the youngest children of social contact and experiences essential for increasing vocabulary. Less or no contact with grandparents, social distancing, no play dates, and the wearing of face coverings in public have left children less exposed to conversations and everyday experiences.

In order to raise the much needed funding to support the purchase of the resources we need, I am undertaking a mammoth challenge. In exactly two weeks time, with no training at all, I will be running ‘The Atlantic Coast Challenge!’ This is a 3 day trail race covering 127k/79 miles from Padstow to Lands End! I will be putting my mental and physical prowess against some of the wildest coastline in Britain. It is wild and rugged with steep climbs and descents that will test my concentration as well as my strength. Each day is unique with its own individual challenges and famous landmarks to add to the experience. The course follows the South West coastal path.

The children at St Alban’s will also be taking part and joining me on my journey virtually by covering the distance as a team; running, jogging and walking on our active mile track!

Please support me, our wonderful school and our very deserving children to raise as much money as possible to better our children's education now which will inevitably increase their life chances in the future.  Any and all donations will make a significant difference to so many of our children's lives.

Thank you all for reading this far.  I'm so very grateful for all your support. I know I'm definitely going to need it. ❤
