A Mother's Love

My son Brian Holmes entered this world on July 2, 1987. As a single mother it was devastating
news to find out my new born has an incurable, terminal disease, sickle cell anemia. Over the years my
son Brian has made me so proud even though hospitalization has taken over 95% of his life. Although,
the odds were against him Brian was determined to graduate high school. One of my proudest moments
was watching him check himself out of the hospital to walk across the stage to get his diploma despite
the excruciating pain he was in. In addition, the day I was planning to get married Brian was in the
hospital and once again checked himself out to keep his word to give me away at the wedding. As a
mother, my heart aches for him and all the pain he has endured year after year. I admire my son so
much as Brian is so determined to not be another statistic or defined by his illness. Although, Brian
continues to be critically ill with sickle cell taking over every aspect of his mind, body and soul we have
faith and know he is a warrior. Brian has the kindest heart and everyone who knows him adores him. He
is the type of guy who would support those in need. Despite two surgeries Brian is still in need of six
additional surgeries. This incudes, two hips, two shoulders, one knee, and a spleen removal. As a result,
necrosis has taken over his body and most days Brian can no longer walk. Brian has to continuously have
IV inserted into his neck as no more veins are left in his body.
Over the years, I often think about so many proud moments for me as a mom. I was able to see
Brian live out his dream of becoming a realtor. He is very passionate about helping others obtain their
dream of home ownership. I have seen Brian push himself to critical limits beyond belief to keep his
word with his clients. I admire his endurance but as a mother I’ve had many sleepless nights worrying
about his well being, and overall health. Brian’s amazing heart also shines in his day to day life. His
kindness and compassion extend not only to his clients, but to those he doesn’t even know. I have seen
Brian do random acts of kindness for many strangers. He has purchased a hotel room for a homeless
woman and her children and bought others groceries to eat. Those acts flow from his spirit of giving and
care that is a core part of who he is.
Family, friends, Brian needs your support now. Pray about all things and if Brian story perks your
heart please give whatever you can. Brian will appreciate anything to help him cope with all of the
financial burden he has incurred. Last year, Brian spent 266 days in the hospital and this year is not
improving. With six more surgeries coming his way, Brian’s recovery process will be extremely long and
difficult. So, I’m asking you to donate whatever you can to assist him with his upcoming medical
expenses, as well as with his regular living expenses. Since Brian misses work often due to his health, it is
becoming more difficult for him to pay for those basic life expenses. For a young man who has shown so
much compassion for others and years of strength and endurance while dealing with this illness, please
consider being a blessing to him now in his time of need.
