Mighty Max. A name that no four month old should have to earn, a name that we have given endearingly to our little Max after he fought so hard to stay alive at just three~four months old. A name that our strong friends have given to their second son, a son that they hoped and prayed for for so long. We are very thankful to be writing this story today about Mighty Max as a story of resilience and strength of a tiny baby making it through what we hope are his hardest times. Sadly there were moments throughout the past couple of months that all of us were very scared that this story could have turned out much worse. But, mighty Max stayed strong. Just like his mom and dad. Michelle and Bryant (bubs) I don’t think it’s possible to come up with the words... You have endured what no parent should ever have to, you have not only stood strong by each other and by your boys but you have also somehow found the few seconds needed to take care of yourselves… just enough. Just enough to keep getting though each scary day. We want you to know that the scariest of days are hopefully in your past but we know that this isn’t the end of hard times for you all as a family. Please know that you have a surrounding of family and friends larger than you could ever know.
Alright friends… now is the time for us to SHOW UP and hopefully help in any way that we can! Help give our friends (family) a little relief, maybe they can take that extra day off to support their family, maybe we can help them cover the astronomical amount of medical bills coming their way, maybe we can help cover a day, week or month of daycare for Leo. We are here for them. Lets help in any way we can!!!
Michelle Bryant Leo and Max… We are so proud of you all as a family.
Below is Mighty Max’s story, told by his mom. Which if I do say so myself, may be the strongest mother, friend, coworker, wife, sister, daughter and NURSE that any of us know… We are all beyond amazed by your strength. We love you.
“First off thank you, we are blown away by all the help we have already received. Family, friends & co-workers have been so generous and for that we are forever grateful. We were not planning to start a go fund me on our own so were surprised and grateful when the choice was made to do so by friends, every bit will help us as we navigate this hard time…
On June 3rd precious Max suddenly vomited, lost consciousness and stopped breathing at home. He was quickly intubated upon arrival at the hospital and I was hoping that would solve the problem. I’d assumed he just had a bad aspiration event.
Over the next hour he proceeded to get much sicker and was brought straight into surgery. Max had suffered a bowel obstruction which was quickly killing his entire small intestine. It was caused by what is called intestinal malformation with formation of a midgut volvulus. He had suffered from gastrointestinal problems his whole life, now we know why. Surgery was long, the recovery has been longer. He remained intubated and on life support for a week due to continued complications, including needing CPR cardiac arrests and multiple codes. We found ourselves a new home in the PICU while our amazing tribe took care of Leo and life outside of the hospital.
Max persevered. The rest of the month was complicated by severe ICU delirium and prolonged, tortuous withdrawals from the many meds that were at one time helping to keep him alive.
Honestly the time since has been a blur. He was discharged from the hospital at the end of June and continues to have frequent doctors appointments and imaging scans to ensure no further blockages are forming.
Once again, we are immensely grateful for our community. We’re just grateful to have Max home and doing ok.” - Michelle & Bubs
