Hello from Room 14, Ms. Dettmer's Bilingual 5th Grade Class, at HA Hyde Elementary in Watsonville!
My 30 incredible students and I are getting so excited for Science Camp, which is coming up soon! From April 12th - April 15th, we will be in the mountains - exploring, hiking, enjoying nature, finding banana slugs, sleeping in cabins, playing games and telling stories around the camp fire, and learning lots about nature, science, and ourselves! This will be the first time in many of my students' lives that they will spend a night away from home, and while I know they are nervous, I also know how excited they are!
It is my goal that all 30 of my students will be able to go to camp. But, the cost is high: $255 per student. The majority of my students' families work in the fields in Watsonville, working very hard for very little money. It astounds and inspires me to see how hard an entire family will work in order to see one young child be able to come to our school in order to get an education and pursue a better life. While the students I work with and their families have very little, they are some of the most generous as well as optimistic people I have ever met. For these reasons and so many more, I want to do everything I can to make sure that these incredibly deserving kids can get the chance to go to Science Camp, which they've been looking forward to since Kindergarten.
I wish that you all could meet my kids - they are the funniest, kindest, most creative, and capable group of kids I have ever met. I feel beyond honored that I get to be their teacher (though I often find myself feeling that they are the ones who are teaching me).
It would mean the world to me and my students to have your support in our efforts to make it to Science Camp with cien por ciento asistencia (100% attendance!). Honestly, it means so much to me that you took the time to open this page and read about my class. If you have any questions, or simply want to learn more about my class, don't hesitate to send me a message!
I truly believe that Science Camp could be a life-changer for some of these kids, who have grown up with very little, but who appreciate every tiny thing, and who express nothing but gratitude, joy, and eagerness to learn more.
Muchas gracias!!
