It was a normal Tuesday in May, 2014...Jazmine had gone to daycare , eaten breakfast, played in centers, ate lunch and laid down for a nap. Shortly after falling asleep, she sat up and her caregiver went over to her and noticed her eye twitching. Suspecting a possible seizure, they called 911. The events following were terrifying. Jazmine was having a complex partial seizure. Upon arrival, the paramedics felt the seizure was over and she was just post ictil. However, that seizure would continue and, in the ambulance ride to the hospital, Jazmine stopped breathing. The seizure continued for an hour and twenty minutes and was followed by several more seizures. Jazmine was air lifted to Cook Children's Hospital in Ft. Worth. She was unresponsive for over 6 hours. Since that fateful day, she has been diagnosed with two forms of epilepsy as well as a dysplasia (insult) on her brain.
At this time, her team of doctors feel she is a good candidate for brain surgery. The surgery would be a resectioning of the right temporal lobe to try and eliminate the seizures. Jazmine has completed Phase 1 of surgery tests and is preparing for Phase 2. Phase 2 is very invasive and will be a lengthy hospital stay and involves surgery to drill holes into the skull and implant EEG probes directly onto the brain and then wait to record a seizure. Sometimes you can go from Phase 2 to surgery but usually those tests are reviewed and then surgery is scheduled at a later date. - Mona Lara
Joe and Mona Lara, Jazmine's parents, raised three biological children of their own, Joe Mikel (25), Matthew (22), and Mykaela (21). Without ever intending to adopt, they ultimately listened to the quiet voice urging them to open their home. In 2010, they took in 13-month-old Ceddrick with no shoes, no clothes, no car seat, and no instructions! One year later, in 2011, they adopted Ceddrick. Shortly after that, they took in Jazmine and, two years later, her adoption was finalized in January of 2014.
This couple has opened their hearts to our community in countless ways. Please open your hearts to them. They have incurred substantial medical bills and will miss a lot of work while Jazmine transitions to Phase 2. Donations will help offset these costs and allow them to fully focus on caring for Jazmine during her hospital stays. The Laras are extremely grateful for your prayers and support.

Update: Jazmine, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 2, will undergo a second brain surgery on November 8th. Her parents used all of their paid time off during the first surgery. Please consider donating and keep them in your prayers.
