As this holiday season kicks off we'd like to start our annual fundraising drive. The holidays are an important time and many people find it in their hearts to give back. We'd like to tell you a little about Squirrelwood.
Each week veterans, first responders and their families come here seeking refuge and help. We are here to provide them with a safe place and to help heal them. The Equine Assisted Therapy program is free of charge. Each client and their family can get the help without the financial burden.
Each month, groups come to Squirrelwood to give back their time after going through our programs. They bring friends (vets) from the surrounding community.
Each year Squirrelwood helps horses in need, upwards of forty currently. We have many sanctuary horses that are here to live out their lives in a safe and comfortable way. They help provide therapy for our program.
As one can imagine, this is quite a costly undertaking. One example is hay. Average cost is $7 per bale. We currently go through 19 square bales a day. That brings us in just shy of $1000 per week. Every week. The horses need hay to maintain weight and stay healthy. Each consumes 1-2% of their body weight daily.
Crouton!!!!
Last December we opened our doors to a tiny veal calf that we named Crouton. On a whim, and with urging from friends, we set up social media accounts for him. Here we are almost a year later and Crouton has a burgeoning fanbase worldwide!!! Each day videos are uploaded of scenes from farm life, silly animal antics, and, of course, Nightly Crouton! Many fans wait to end their day till they have seen Crouton and Co. having night check feed. Our UK fans start their day with Crouton. We never could have imagined so many people would tune in. It has been a wonderful journey.
This week we opened our barn to a little veal calf that we have named Pumpernickel. Join us in welcoming this little guy. We will be posting videos and photos as we get to know him and introduce him to the crew.
The backbone of all this is our sanctuary. There is no Squirrelwood, no veterans program, and no Nightly Crouton without the donations of people like you. We rely on public support to continue our great work.
