Donation protected
The central themes of Squamish Nature Learners include outdoor place-based education, family involvement, and Indigenous teachings.
We have a 1 to 7 adult to student ratio. Alongside a certified teacher, parents also volunteer; this creates a small, safe, and gentle learning environment.
The land we use, unceded territory of the Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish) Nation —in what is now known as Legacy Park –has provided us with an incredible environment to learn from. By working with mentors from the Squamish Nation, the children learn culture, history, geography, and language from a perspective that views our relationship with the land as an integral part of our being —we are incredibly thankful to the Skwxwu7mesh for passing on this knowledge to our children.
While the children learn outside year round, they also have a yurt for the cold rainy days. The yurt is not only a place to dry off and warm up, but also provides a sense of 'home' for the children as the families invested time and money to build it. While the basic construction of the yurt has been mostly completed, there are still things that need to be put in place before the weather turns really cold and wet.
To finish the project we are raising funds for finishing supplies such as flooring, furniture, electrical, and a heat source. Any extra funds will go towards the Squamish Nation mentors and school supplies.
As an expression of gratitude, those who make a donation of $250 or more will receive a personalized card, hand-made by the students. $500 or more will receive a wood carving by Arthur Harry [See-appl-tun] a Squamish Nation mentor involved with the program.
From all of us at Squamish Nature Learners, thank you!
