If you were lucky enough to know him, then you know we lost a true original on Friday February 27th when Matthew Vaughn Burdick left this world.

Matt made his way to Salt Lake City in the late ’90s by way of Cortez, Colorado – carrying with him the trademark smirk and laugh, an insatiable curiosity for whatever he damn well wanted to be into, thank you very much, and the kind of mechanical mind that could fix just about anything.

He built a life here. He raised a daughter and a son. He worked for years in the brewing world, turning water, grain, and patience into something communal and joyful – which feels exactly right for Matt.

A father, a partner, a brother, a son, and a friend – Matt was a solid human – the kind who moved easily across circles, tribes, guilds, and friendospheres. He was a fixer. An aficionado. An audiophile. A craftsman. A relentless tinkerer. An aspirational debater at times. An expert in recipes, gaskets, circuitry, various rigs, and whatever else the day required.

If you were in his orbit, he probably bailed you out of a sticky icky sitch at least once. Or taught you something you didn’t know you needed to learn.

This is not an obituary – we’ll leave that to his family.

This is a call to rally.

Let’s rally for Matt the way he would rally for a river trip, an off-road adventure, a bluegrass festival, or for you when you were in a pinch. Let’s show up for the people he loved.
