Elementary School Production of Jungle Book!

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Gwen, and I am a teaching artist placed this year at the outstanding Samuel Powel Elementary School in Philadelphia. This year, we are putting on a production of the Jungle Book Kids with the 3rd and 4th graders in our drama club! We have worked so hard to get down the music, dance, and blocking, and I am proud of our student's hard work and love. If you know anything about Powel, you know about the love. It is tangible to everyone who steps foot in this school. My goal in creating an after-school club was to give the students a chance to create. I wanted them to create music, art, community, and something they could put work into and be proud of. It amazes me how much the cast has risen to the challenge. They care about one another and our show. They consistently show up with focus and drive (even on days when they would rather be home). They come in at lunch to go over lines with each other and proudly tell me how much they practice at home. I cannot wait to see what we can make together.

While we have the spirit, passion and skills to put on a production that the students will be proud of, we are lacking the funds. As I always tell them, a show is a community event. We depend on every actor to remember their line, song and dance. We trust that the director will make us look good and that the sound designer will turn on our mics. And now, we must trust that our Powel family will give us financial support. It has been an honor to be placed at a school with such a strong sense of community. I am calling on that community now to help us.

Some ways we will use the funds:
  • The amazing Teacher Chris is building our set from scratch! And to make this possible, we need money for building materials and paints
  • a set is not the only thing that creates the world of the show; we also need props
  • In order to make a show glow, we need to wow the audience with costumes! Because of the size of our cast, almost all of our students are playing multiple parts, and while that gives everyone a chance to shine, it means we need funds for multiple costume pieces per student
  • Along with costumes, we need makeup to put on the finishing touch
  • And what would a show be if we could not hear anyone? We will also need money for sound equipment

This year is an investment. During the move to our beautiful new school, many things got lost, misplaced or broken. It is our responsibility to replace those things and invest in equipment that will last for many years.

Above are the necessities to put on a production that gives the students not only a proper show experience, but a finished product that they can be proud of. Any amount of money will help us towards our goal. Thank you so much!
