2023-Nov-22 Update:
This morning, Hayden’s family Doctor has approved him attending school, 1 day a week into the new year. This will include (to be approved) someone being with him at all times to ensure his safety. Hayden will begin physiotherapy next Thursday, which is scheduled to be twice a week for 6months. He’s also been instructed to consume softer foods until the muscles in his neck and throat have improved to ensure he isn’t choking while eating. Please continue your positive thoughts towards Hayden and his family ♥️
Hi,
I am Bailey - a friend first, a cousin second, to Maiya and Hayden. Maiya is married to my cousin Greg and together also have baby Logan.
As some of you may know, Hayden was recently released from CHEO, after being admitted on November 12. At this point, Hayden had been quite sick for nearly 2 weeks. He had been seen by our local Hospital and treated for what was believed to be constipation. After a couple of days, Hayden was still not showing signs of improvement and was in extreme pain. His Mom Maiya, decided to take him to CHEO. While the agonizing hours turned into days, Hayden was enduring several tests, a CT scan, an MRI and 2 lumbar punctures. Hayden was then diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Guillain-Barre is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system produces harmful antibodies that attack your nerves. This then causes muscle weakness and can cause paralysis. Hayden also received 2 rounds of Intravenous Immunoglobulin, which the exposure of autoantigens triggers the recognition by antigen-presenting cells, leading to activation and polarization of T helper cells. T helper cells and innate cells provide activation signals through cytokines, which leads either to production of autoantibodies from the differentiated B cells into plasma cells or to tissue damage from the release of inflammatory mediators by immune cells, complement activation and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Hayden has been at home recovering, but still has some work ahead of him that physiotherapy will assist with.
Maiya and Mike - Hayden’s Dad, took turns staying with him in CHEO. This has resulted in extra expenses that not many would be prepared for. Maiya works from home and does not have benefits. Maiya missed several days of work/income while being with Hayden. His current medical bill is just shy of $2,000 and he has yet to begin physiotherapy, which is also, not covered.
If you can, please help by donating to their young family.
Stay strong Hayden, you’ve got this buddy!
