I am David Miles Jr. I am known as the "GodFather of Skate" in San Francisco and have been spreading “rolligion” for the past 7 years at the Church of 8 Wheels Roller Disco, the past 20 years at Burning Man at the Black Rock Roller Disco and for the past 42 years in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Now I have hooked up Carolyn Johnson with the Black Cultural Zone in Oakland Ca. to spread rolligiion by building a brand new outdoor roller skating rink to Liberation Park. next to the Eastmont Mall on 73rd and Foothill Blvd.
Liberation Park is right in the heart of East Oakland, Ca. This is an area that has been deprived of the kind of recreational opportunities most communities have taken for granted for decades!!! Oakland has not had a roller rink since 1971. Roller skating is fun, inexpensive and the kind of inclusive, exciting and healthy recreation that is sorely needed here. We have created an outdoor roller skating that is about 112 ft. x 60ft. Construction of the rink is nearly complete.
I say nearly completed because of the result of a big skate party we had to open the rink to the public on Sunday, June 20, 2021. There was a great crowd on hand to celebrate the opening of the rink. There were so many happy skaters attending that I could see issues with the flooring as the numbers of skaters on the floor grew. All of the problems can be fixed, but we must have another layer of plywood, not just the one we have now.
I am appealing to you to help me to help the people of Oakland. Help me to raise the funds to make this rink something that will last forever!!! Every cent we raise will go back to the Black Cultural Zone as they have spent much of their annual budget to get us where we are today. They are a great organization doing the hard work of providing for the community. Please visit their website at http://www.blackculturalzone.org
