Hi, my name is Maia. I’m a mother, a grandmother, small business owner, and Boulder Chamber Ambassador member—and on September 5th, my life changed overnight.
Just as I was entering a new growth phase of my business, I became a transtibial (below-the-knee) amputee. A severe bloodstream infection and osteomyelitis in my right foot led to emergency, multi-week hospitalizations, five surgeries, and an extended stay in inpatient rehabilitation. While summer slipped by, so did my ability to work, earn income, and live independently.
I’ve recently returned home after learning basic mobility using a wheelchair and crutches. While I’m grateful to be home, the reality has been sobering. I’m now navigating recovery while struggling to cover everyday bills and keep my livelihood afloat. I’m doing what I can—working remotely on administrative tasks—to keep Superior Notary Service, the business I’ve built over 20 years, alive and positioned to grow as we prepare for the Sundance Film Festival in 2027.
The loss of my foot has reshaped nearly every part of daily life. I'm truly blessed with my incredible partner, David, who has carried an enormous emotional, physical, and financial burden throughout this nonstop medical journey, standing beside me with unwavering love and strength. My youngest daughter, Emily, has fueled us with her wonderful cooking, laughter, and love while also being a gentle home nurse/ wound care assistant and devoted mom.
Right now, I’m relearning how to move safely in my own home and preparing to be fitted for my first prosthesis—anticipated around January 2026. I exercise daily to rebuild balance, strength, and flexibility, knowing that even routine activities now require significantly more energy. Simple things I once took for granted—moving around my home, entering my office, maintaining independence—now require planning, assistance, and resources.
