Sugar hasn't eaten since Saturday evening of this past weekend. Then she sudden became lethargic and couldn't get up to walk early Monday morning. Sugar's regular vet was unavailable, so Jessica was advised to take Sugar to an emergency, round the clock vet. Sugar is currently at VCA Arboretum View Animal Hospital in Downers Grove, IL., and has been there since late Monday afternoon. Her gums were extremely pale, blood-work showed that she was severely "anemic" and she needed a blood transfusion ASAP. They have not yet come up with a definitive diagnosis, but believe that it may be IMHA, Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. 'This is a condition where the body's immune system attacks and removes its own red blood cells, thus leading to severe anemia, an unhealthy yellow coloring of the tissues, whites of dog's eyes, jaundice, as well as an assortment of possible life-threatening complications.' Vets are doing multiple tests to rule out other possible causes of what may be the source of her low red blood count. Jessica was told that Sugar's minimum 2 day stay, with blood transfusion, would be at a cost of approx. $6000. We won't know anything else until results from Sugar's next blood draw at 8pm Tuesday evening. If blood transfusion #1 is holding steady Sugar may be able to go home for the night, then return Wednesday for out-patient care, including another blood draw. If her blood is not holding steady, then Sugar will need to stay in the hospital and have her second blood transfusion.
Some of you may know that Jessica's Eskie, Sweet Pea (Sugar's bio-sister) was very ill earlier this year. The good news is that after several months Sweet Pea has recovered and is doing great. The unfortunate news is Sweet Pea's vet bills added up to over $5000....which are still being paid off.
In light of having a second furbaby in the same calendar year become suddenly so ill, Care Credit Card being tapped out very soon with Sugar's current treatment, this fundraiser has been started. I have known Jessica for over 11 years, anyone who knows Jess, also knows that she doesn't want to ask for help. Jess is one of the most generous people I have ever known, she would give the shirt off her back if she thought it would benefit a friend. Jessica has always offered her advice to anyone and everyone who wanted it on healthy dog food, treats, chews, supplements and more. Sugar just turned 10, still young for most of our Eskies....
Whatever amount you can help with will be so greatly appreciated. Please note this is not a Chicagoland Eskie Rescue fundraiser, this is specifically to help Jessica help Sugar, even if she is diagnosed with IMHA, some dogs have been able to pull through with the right vet care and multiple blood transfusions. Please share and thank you in advance.
