On Sunday, September 21st, I found a 5-month-old Red Catahoula puppy lying injured on the side of Highway 198 near Goshen. She had been hit by a car and left for dead. Despite her pain, when I picked her up, she wagged her tail and gave me kisses. That instant, I knew I couldn’t just leave her—I had to give her a fighting chance.
Because animal control was closed that day, I cared for her overnight until she could be seen by Tulare County Animal Services the next morning. X-rays later confirmed both her front and back left legs are broken. She’s only a baby, just 30 lbs, and she fought hard to survive. The vets say her front leg should heal with time, but her back leg will likely require surgery—or possibly even amputation. Surgery quotes have been between $6,000–$10,000, which I simply cannot afford on my own.
To make matters worse, one of the clinics she was seen at bandaged her improperly, causing painful sores and an infection that spread under the splint. When I confronted them, they offered no refund—only an urgent push for amputation. I knew I couldn’t let her suffer more neglect.
Thankfully, I was able to get her in with Valley Vet in Lemoore with Dr. McCrone and was referred to Dr. Kahn at All Creatures in Fresno. She is finally on antibiotics, having her wounds cleaned and her splints changed properly, but we are still facing a huge battle: fighting infection and raising enough money for surgery to save her leg.
Through all of this, she continues to show her sweet, forgiving spirit. Even in pain, she still wags her tail, leans in for cuddles, and tries to be her playful self. She doesn’t understand why she can’t run and play, but she never stops fighting.
I am asking for help to cover:
Surgery costs for her back leg
Ongoing wound care, medications, and re-splinting
Support until she’s strong enough for adoption or rescue placement
If donations go beyond what she needs in my care, they will go directly to a rescue who can take her or to Tulare County Animal Services to help another animal in need.
She’s only 5 months old—her life is just beginning. Please help me give her the chance she so desperately deserves. No puppy should have to suffer alone on the side of the road.
Even $5 makes a difference. If you can’t donate, please share her story. Together, we can show her that humans can be just as kind as she believes we are.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us fight for this little survivor.
UPDATE OCT 2nd
Surgery went well. She will be staying at All Creatures Vet Clinic in Fresno until Saturday morning. She will be monitored and given antibiotic injections. Vet bill for surgery is right around $2,100 but I will update when I pick her up Saturday and pay the remainder of our bill.
Update: Oct 4
Surgery went well and All Creatures vet was amazing. We have another appointment Monday afternoon to make sure everything is healing properly. I apologize for the late update she had been extremely needing since she has been home and I can't leave the room without her panicking. I will update again after out followup appointment
Oct 21st update:
so far we are healing! Our next appointment is next monday for a follow up! Spooky personality is finally showing now that is isn't having to be heavily medicated! She is soooo fun and playful! She has befriended the cats in my home and is so bubbly and wiggles all over the place when I get home from work.
we have one more surgery planned for late November/ early December to remove the pin on the back leg. Front leg is still healing well and has given us no problems. I can't wait to post an update when she finally is allowed to run and play! Thank you again to everyone who has helped Save Spooky!
