Volunteering to nurse in Africa
Beschermde donatie
Firstly, THANK YOU very much for clicking and taking an interest in my campaign!
My name is Hannah Jefferson, I’m a second year Student Nurse at The University of Manchester. I have been given the opportunity to work a nursing elective placement next summer in Ghana, Africa. I’m trying to raise £2515 to spend 7 weeks to work in Ghana and provide healthcare.
The placement is organised by ‘Work the World’ who specialise in healthcare electives and provide the accomodation and hospital/clinic placement.
I have spent the last 4 years working towards becoming a Student Nurse at one of the best medical universities in the UK. I am completely committed to becoming the best nurse I can be and believe in the NHS, and our values that everyone deserves healthcare,
In Ghana, the disparity between the services offered to patients in developed vs. developing nations will become immediately obvious. Lack of access to funds, equipment and resources means the level of care patients receive is limited.
This placement will allow me to help diagnose and treat unfamiliar conditions such as dengue fever, malaria, rabies and more.
Because healthcare is expensive and patients often live great distances from the hospitals, there will be a high number of patients suffering with advanced-stage conditions.
The two most known diseases in Ghana are malaria and HIV/AIDS. These diseases are very easy to catch but also very easy to avoid or prevent from having. I am aiming to benefit from my time there by learning about the epidemiology of these diseases and to help provide prevention and education regarding these diseases. Additionally, before travel I will be writing an essay on outcomes I wish to achieve whilst in Africa based on Education, Research, Specialist Medicine and Leader Management.
Being able to achieve this comes at a steep financial price, as a full time nursing student, I am unpaid therefore I am completely unable to fund this trip myself completely. However, my university has suggested fundraising. I will be completing local fundraising events throughout the next few months to raise as much as possible and adding funds from xmas/birthday money etc.
I am kindly asking my family, friends and members of the public to consider sponsoring me to help me to help others. Any amount, no matter how small would mean the world to me.
I truly believe in the kindness of others and I will hope to pass on your generosity to those I provide healthcare to, if I am lucky enough to raise these funds.
I have included a breakdown at the bottom of this page of the costs which make up the total I am fundraising. I am also working part time and putting everything I can towards the goal.
If you are a business or I can do anything in return for a donation, please just ask. Health and happiness to you all!
