We will be taking part in an Abseil down the Europa Hotel in Belfast on Sunday 22nd June to raise vital funds for Hoist assisted Holiday.

Hoist Assisted Holidays are a non- profit charitable organisation set up by Richard. When Richard was 3 years old he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This disease affects his skeletal muscles, including his heart and lungs.

Sadly, he is unable to do everyday tasks such as eat, shower, or control his wheelchair without the help of carers and hoists. He has complex medical needs which need monitoring 24/7 and has been completely ventilator dependent for the last five years.

Richard is now age 30, and his dream is to build a bespoke lodge in Ballycastle, that will allow disabled people with neurological diseases, life changing injuries, etc to have a holiday that they deserve with their family, friends, and carers in Northern Ireland.

Specialised equipment is required to help Richard on a daily basis. These aids include a hospital type bed, air flow mattress, specialised supportive shower chairs and a hoist which allows him to be transferred from a wheelchair into bed or the bathroom etc. All these aids will be provided in the lodge that we are fundraising for.

The lodge will be located at Atlantic View Caravan Park in Ballycastle, which will have stunning views of Rathlin Island and the Atlantic Ocean. Richard requires £250,000 to make this happen, currently they have raised an amazing £34,000.

We are aiming to raise at least £200*. All funds go directly to Hoist Assisted Holidays account which is managed by Sharon Douglas (Richard's mum).

We have a family member with the same diagnosis as Richard - Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and therefore we see firsthand how families could greatly benefit from an appropriately adapted and fully accessible place to holiday in Northern Ireland.
