Sponsor Refugee Pupils' Tuition

My name is Kidist Teklemariam and I am Director of Unleashing Refugee Potential, which I established based on my own challenges of seeking asylum and rebuilding my life in the UK.

Unleashing Refugee Potential is a Leeds-based Community Interest Company that provides holistic support around education, employment and entrepreneurship. Our work is driven by a desire to improve the lives of refugees and migrant communities, reduce the inequalities they encounter and to break the cycle of poverty: https://urp.org.uk/

We have launched the Thriving Families tuition project (https://urp.org.uk/thriving-families/) to address the worsening educational inequalities that have resulted from school closures. For more information please read our research on Home Learning Inequalities

We are deeply concerned that the educational inequalities resulting from school closures will prevent young refugees and asylum seekers from being able to fulfil their potential. The families we are supporting are living in poverty and cannot afford to pay for tuition for their children to catch up on lost learning; the national average price of tuition is £35 per hour. Therefore we are providing pupils at schools in Leeds with IT equipment and home learning materials and linking them with volunteer tutors to deliver weekly one-to-one online tuition. Our tutors support with: 1:1 tuition, improving study skills, exam preparation, increasing confidence and support with homework

With your support, we can fight educational inequalities and provide young refugees and asylum seekers with free online tuition to support them along their educational journey. We hope that free tuition will give pupils from refugee backgrounds an opportunity to catch up and improve their academic outcomes.

With your donation, we can provide:

1) £10 = 1 week of tuition (2 hours)
2) £40 = 1 month of tuition (8 hours)
3) £120 = 3 months of tuition (24 hours)
4) £240 = 6 months of tuition (48 hours)
5) £480 = 1 year of tuition (96 hours)

Your money will go towards internet connection, IT equipment, teaching materials, DBS checks for volunteers and educational materials for tuition sessions.

As a thank you, with each donation we will send you a free 'Thriving Families' tote bag, which were designed by young refugees who won our Thriving Families Art Competition: https://urp.org.uk/thriving-families-art-competition-winners/

Our tote bags are made from 100% Fairtrade certified cotton!
