Hallo allemaal,

The Creator’s Game

New Amsterdam (nu New York), in 2024 exact 400 jaar geleden.

Hello all,

We are Kim and Timon, both proud players of Netherlands Boxlacrosse teams (ladies and men): Kim as goalie, and Timon as field player. Boxlacrosse is a North American full-contact sport descended from Native Americans. It resembles a combination between ice hockey and regular (field) lacrosse and is played in a (dry) ice hockey ring. The sport is played separately, so there is a women's team and a men's team. We have some more explanation of the sport, with photos, at the bottom of the page.

During the European Championship Boxlacrosse two years ago, Kim was able to gain experience with the Dutch men's team, where she proudly became the first woman to compete in an international (European Championship/World Championship) tournament Boxlacrosse. An experience never to be forgotten! Kim: ‘Never would I have dared to dream that when we organised the first open training sessions in December 2019, after last World Cup, that we now get to participate with a full team in the first ever Women's World Boxlacrosse Championship! A unique experience, this is the very first Women's World Cup within this discipline of lacrosse, for which we have been training extremely hard since last year.’

Next September, the Dutch men's team will take part in the World Boxlacrosse Championships for the second time, where the men will try to defend an eighth-place finish. Timon also competed then (2019), as well as the European Championship two years ago. Timon: ‘My first really big tournament was in 2019 which was quite an experience in itself. This is the second World Cup I have competed in and it continues to be rewarding to participate in. The combination of strength, speed, endurance, and the team of course, make it worth training for this for a year.’

The World Cup will take place in Utica, New York; the region where the sport originates from, among other places.

As the sport is very small in the Netherlands, there is no funding from the federation or other sports umbrellas and all costs come on the plate of the individual players. Including prior training camps and equipment, these exceed €7,000 per person. We are therefore trying to raise part of this through crowdfunding.

And why are we doing this together? Because we are making this trip together, now with the World Cup but also in our lives :)

The Creator's Game

Lacrosse - traditionally called ‘the Creator's Game’ - has been played for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It is a team sport in which players use a stick with a net to pass the ball and score goals. The faster, indoor version of traditional field lacrosse is called box lacrosse and is played on a smaller, enclosed field. Known for

its intensity and physical play, it promises an exciting experience for players and spectators.

The Dutch national teams' trip to the World Championships in Utica (20-29 September 2024) is a symbolic milestone for many reasons. For one, this World Cup is the inaugural women's tournament on the world stage. This puts our women at the forefront of promoting and growing this unique sport, built on foundations of mutual respect and friendship.

With Haudenosaunee Neal Powless as a coach of the Dutch team, we honour the historic bond between the Dutch and the Haudenosaunee, enshrined in the Two Row Wampum. This peace treaty was made more than four centuries ago, when the Dutch first set foot on Turtle Island (now America). It played an important role in the founding of New Amsterdam (now New York), exactly 400 years ago in 2024.
