About 3 weeks ago, I awoke to an email from the management of Varna International Opera Company, informing me that my name was recommended to them to join them on their 2025 summer tour of Europe, and asking if this interested me. I was completely honored by this amazing opportunity and that someone had thought of me and my work well enough to recommend me.
After working out a virtual audition, discussions with management and Maestro, I was offered both roles of Simone and Betto (swapping each performance with another castmate) in Giacomo Puccini’s hilarious opera “Gianni Schicchi,” to be a featured soloist in their concert production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s medley concert “A Grand Night For Singing,” and in addition, was just recently offered the Bass solos for Rossini’s “Petite messe solemne”, requested by our maestro himself. We will land in Varna, Bulgaria, traveling and performing from there all the way to Venice, Italy, with full orchestra, and vocal coachings and directing from members of The Metropolitan Opera artistic and musical staff, as well as many other esteemed institutions.
It was truly humbling that our Maestro, a conductor for the Metropolitan Opera, has specifically asked for me to be cast in those roles, and I graciously accepted! Now comes the fun part of learning all of that music, and fully memorizing it so we can hit the ground running on day 1!
Because I was asked to audition and join the company (as opposed to reaching out to them to request auditions, etc.), the management was very willing to work with me on costs. Right now, thanks to the cuts, grants, and stipends they afforded me, I only have to produce payment for room and board, flights, and incidentals (meals, inner-city travel, etc.). That leaves an approximate balance of $4,000 due by the end of May. I work a full-time position, but have also taken a secondary job at night to work towards that balance. I thank you so very much for your willingness to support me, and I look forward to greatly representing you all throughout Europe this summer! And as always, I will happily offer my singing services as needed in return!
