Let’s increase racial literacy in Edinburgh

Donation protected
What is the BlackEd Movement? We are BlackED Movement, an anti-racist organisation founded to create anti-racist policies and culture at the University of Edinburgh. We aim to work with the University of Edinburgh and various stakeholders to ensure we create a culture at our university that tackles issues of racial discrimination in an effective and appropriate manner. This organisation was created by seven students who wanted to make a lasting change at the University and have dedicated their free labour into discussing with various University officials a way to move forward after the tragic death of George Floyd. As we have been able to look into the future of this movement we have decided to focus on Black students as they make up the lowest number of black students of any Russell Group University. We want black students to be well represented while still being BME friendly and showing solidarity to BME students and their issues in order to create an anti racist culture at our University. By campaigning for and implementing the four core aims outlined in our open letter to Vice-Chancellor Mathieson, we believe we can improve the racial climate at the university and develop a stronger sense of belonging on campus, by making sure that they become more visible on campus and that it is made clear that they are an integral part of the university and are valued. Our Constitution and the Movement was officially established on the 6th July 2020 What will a donation to BlackEd go towards? All donations to the BlackEd Movement will be divided equally between our 4 projects, (BlackEd Outreach, BlackEd Centre, Black Arts Matter, Black Feminist Space) and a large event we are planning later in the year, so we can accomplish our four aims set out. BlackEd will also be donating £1000 to charities over the academic year. Charities and causes we choose to support will range from the Black Lives Matter Movement to Sickle Cell Anaemia Awareness and Support. Charities will be chosen by our directors which align with the aims of each BlackEd project, to uplift Black students and Black members of the Edinburgh community beyond our immediate reach. The money will mainly be used for events especially during Black History Month when we plan to launch a massive campaign around campus and make Black History Month more visible. The money you donate will help black students and black children in various primary and high schools who will benefit from these funds. We want to create a pipeline that starts at primary level all the way to high school University and alumni in order to create a strong Black Community in Edinburgh that will increase the number of black students that come to our University. Please note: BlackEd Directors and Ambassadors work strictly on an unpaid basis, and will not be in direct receipt of any of the funds raised. We will be releasing our financial statements after each semester which will include a breakdown of budgets and expenditure. Our fund will be checked by members of the Fundraising team, the secretary, the finance director and events director and an independent auditor. How can I donate? Please donate through our Go fund me if you would like to donate in any other way feel free to email us on [email redacted].
