English Class Language School - fundraising to help Refugees & Asylum seekers afford to learn English

Aim

We provide English classes and community outings in Lichfield for refugees, asylum seekers and other local residents who have English as an Additional Language, so that they can improve their English, prepare for employment, and become fully included in their local community. Our School has been established since 2011.

At English Class we believe that learning English is far more than grammar and vocabulary – it’s about opening doors to community, independence and hope. Our lessons are designed for asylum seekers, refugees and anyone who needs a safe space to learn, connect and thrive.

What we do

We currently run a range of weekly classes (both face-to-face and online) from two venues in the heart of the community. These sessions are led by dedicated, experienced and highly-qualified tutors, supported by a team of wonderful volunteers, who also support our community activities, providing individual support when needed.

Why your support matters

Many of our learners and volunteers face real barriers – Many have fled war-torn countries, where their education has been interrupted, or terrifying political regimes. They have suffered physical and psychological trauma, and are often separated from their family members. They cannot afford access to digital resources or transport. These factors, plus the crucial language barrier and lack of familiarity with the new culture can lead to feelings of isolation. Hence the importance of learning in a secure and familiar environment and of meaningful community connections.

Your help means that…

We can continue to provide classes for those who cannot pay or cannot pay the full fees; inclusion for all is of vital importance.

We can continue to offer community trips and events organised by volunteers – such as our Summer School, introducing new students to the City of Lichfield with all it has to offer, museum visits, joint activities with the Garrick Theatre – that build friendships and belonging beyond the classroom.

How we will use the funds

Every pound donated will be valuable to our students and will go towards making our programme accessible and inclusive by removing financial barriers.

Specifically:

- Course fees to pay for the Tutors and for venue hire;

- Costs for small-group social and community outings which support wellbeing and integration;

- Maintenance of minimal digital support to keep online access possible whenever required;

- Learning Resources

- Examination fees

The total course fees for a student for a 12-week term are £250.
